AFD 100 Need Help - Lot of Noise

Postby tourlourat » 06 Nov 2012, 03:00

Hi AFD 100 owners,

I would like to know if somebody may help me about my AFD 100 trouble.
Since the begining, my AFD is making a lot of noise when I play only. This noise is the same as Michael but my tube are not flashing.

This noise could be not so strong and suddendly becomes very high. Sometimes it covers my Guitar.
I decide to change my four tubes EL34, but do you think it will be enough or is it something else.

Any help will be much apreciated.

Many Thanks

Yes the unit is still under warranty, but I don't want to pay any shiping cost.

I would send it in for a warranty repair. The shipping may be expensive, but its better than having an amp that sounds like its about to explode

Stupid question, but have you tried any new preamp or power amp tubes to isolate if either has an issue ? It is a tube amp, so the first place I would try is the tubes, please don't tell me you spent $ 2000 on an amp and don't have enough for spare tubes.

Please, try some tube swaps. I have been repairing amps for 15 years and the biggest issue that screws warranty techs is that the customer could not try a few new tubes. Factory repairs usually require a repair authorization from the manufacturer before you can even touch the amp, so it may sit for a few weeks and then if a simple tube replacement is the issue you get paid $ 14.00 for all of your trouble including time to pack and ship.

Go through your preamp tubes one at a time with a new 12AX7, then if necessary try power tubes. Regardless of any Internet banter, these AFD's are quite well built and I don't see many areas of future issues.

I think tubes too. Look at the blue light coming from within, probbly shorting somewhere in the tubes. Get a fresh set, then do the auto bias. Dumb question but just to make sure, you did have a speaker cable hooked to it? When you panned the back of the amp I couldn't tell. You do know no speaker cable and amp on = very bad. Check your fuses too.

I listened your advice, I resent the AFD to be repair under warranty.
Result the default was a defective tube ECC83.
Now it works !!!
Thanks all for your support

All that, plus the potential destruction in shipping all for a $ 12.00 preamp tube. I bet the tech was thrilled at the payday for that repair.

You need to read a book on tube amp maintenance. It will save you a lot of hassle and money in the future.
