Good G*d the AFD100 is Loud

Postby Marshall Fiend » 22 Dec 2012, 20:57

I'm an apartment dweller and a recreational player, so I don't get to take my babies out to play them at gigging volumes. Nevertheless, I never get noise complaints when I crank up in my bedroom. So, this weekend, I took my 2266 and my AFD100 and my two Avatar 2x12 cabs into my bedroom and took turns hooking up the heads to both 2x12s at once. Not surprisingly, the 2266 delivered great tones on the LDR. I wish I could play it out. The HDR channel sounded good, but boy does it have a kick to it. (I never came close to turning the master volume up past 11 o'clock on the HDR channel.)

The AFD100 was another story. Jeebus, that thing is loud as balls. I had the gain and the master both at 1 o'clock, and I turned the power scaler to 1 o'clock as well. OMG it was crazy loud. Even wearing ear protectors (gun enthusiast style) it was earth-shaking. I'm surprised I didn't get noise complaints. I gotta get me a farm house with a barn--or maybe an apple orchard like Surf--so I can take my babies out there and dime them. That would be sweet. Maybe one day . . .
Happiness is playing a Gibson guitar through a Marshall amplifier.

Haha. Your thoughts were the same as mine when I first played through it. Wait till you get one day were you have the power scale fully off and the master up to 10. ;)

I believe it's acceptable in the USA on the fourth of July to play the Star Spangled Banner Hendrix-style on a dimed amp for a few minutes.
Anyone who complains about that ought to be taken outside and shot.
I'm afraid you'll have to wait 7 months for the next opportunity bro.
Dime that puppy!!!

Yes, it is a loud amp. I always play with Master on 7 and at home I never get the EPA past 12 o'clock or I'll have to buy me a new pair of ears.

Can you get decent low volume tones with this amp for home use? I use my amps at home and also jams and gigs.

For sure you can get good tones at low volume using the EPA. All you really lose besides volume is headroom which is totally expected and explains why it sounds better the more you turn it up.

I use mine at the studio at ear bleeding volumes and I love it.

Saying that, the new modded 1959 I recently acquired seems much louder
