AFD100 info and price for the US

Postby surfnorthwest » 26 Aug 2010, 14:18

Here is a bit of an update on availibility of the AFD100 here in the states. My sales guy from Sweetwater did get a commitment from Korg in how many units they will get, He would not give me a number but I know it's more then one they will get.

US price will be $1999.00. Right now it looks like delivery for late November early December time frame. Asked about the 100 signed units and Korg was unable to discuss them or provide any information on price or who was going to get them at this point. US dealers are able to accept pre orders now. I am first in line for one at Sweetwater but I had to pre pay for it to get in the que.

Well I don't think I am the first but I will get the first one Sweetwater gets from Korg anyway. Always been a 100 watt Marshall guy since the 70s and after all these years they now have a 100 watt amp that you can power scale, can't pass that up.

I was talking to some guys over on another forum who have been following the development of the AFD100 much closer than me and he thinks it is going to be very much like a hot rod Marshall JMP 2203 with a better eq and loads of gain. IMO it's all speculation until it's launch.

I love the features of this amp but the tone has me a bit spooked that I might not like it, I can't really tell anything from these cheesy YouTube clips, but a hot rod 2203 would be cool especially if you can tame it.

I hope the official launch will have some professional clips done by both Chris and Slash.

The tone will definately be a hotrodded 2203. Having the afd/34 switch should work like this, in afd mode it will enable one half of an extra preamp tube with appropriate cathode resistor, plate resistor, mixer resister and appropriate bypass caps. When switched in #34 mode the extra half preamp tube will be dropped and the signal will go through a different series of resistor/bypass caps which will be tuned for extra gain and bite. Both modes are basically hotrodded 2203. Both modes should sound great and have a good range as far as dialing in different settings. I have experimented with both mods and both should clean up decently well when turning your volume down for a clean tone.

Just speculation. I am familiar with both the #36(afd)mod and the #34 mods, as far as how they work and what not. As far as the cap and resistor values go though.. Its all speculation, at least on #36.

Man I hope you are right Kevin, if you are this could become a very desirable amp once the word gets out. Who doesn't want a hotrodded 2203 that can scale and self bias. :soccer

Well at least historically the #36 is not a hotdodded 2203 but a Superlead with cascaded gain stages.
But #34 really is a mod done on a 2203.
