Tube/Valve Change

Postby Hellhound » 09 Jan 2011, 13:44

I just changed the valves/tubes in the AFD.

It took minutes and was so easy. 4 screws on the back cover, instant access to valves. Remove spring retainers. Pull the 6550's out, line up the El34 and push home. Put the spring retainers on and put the four screws back on.

Switch on - Auto-Bias while it warms up. Job Done.

How cool is that! Easiest tube change EVER!

I didn't like the EL34's in this amp. It kept the cool treble and afd sound but became very bassy and lacked mids.

That's cool though, it'll only take a few moments to change them back :Thumbs

First the auto bias is very cool. Hope Marshall makes this standard equipment if it would not dramatically increase the cost.

If I had the amp I would be doing the same thing, try diiferent tubes. I would be itching to try KT88s and KT66s.

I can see the layout and the auto bias being standard in the future. Other than cost, which should get cheaper in time, why wouldn't they? It's brilliant!

I only have the EL34's and the standard valves at the moment :violin I'm looking forward to trying the KT66's once funds allow.

I used the White Marshall ones from my JMD. Not the best ones to try I suppose. I've been sticking to the 6550's and getting to know the amp better. There may only be one sound but there's a lot of different tones to discover.

Hmmm I think those are chinese. Not terrible, but I wonder what the SEDs or the Svetlanas sound like.

Hello all

I would like to try on my AFD100 three set's of valves: EL34, 6L6, KT66.
Does anyone know if i can do by just swaping them and then Auto-Bias?
Please comment

This is not a problem with the AFD, you can even mix different tubes at the same time. I am waiting to hear results of KT66s or KT88s. I think in the end the 6550 tubes might still sound best.

I can't tell you the exact brand of tubes in the AFD. I only Know the preamp ones uses a couple of JJ ECC83 low noise.

Lately Marshall is using some good power tubes on high end amps. For example my 1987x Reissue came with a copule of EL34M looking into the specs...
