noisegate effect issue

Postby cpubound » 08 Jul 2011, 08:14

Just wondering if anyone else is noting that at low volume the afd100 seems to sound like a noise gate is kicking in? :wtf I love the amp. And I have no issue at moderate volume. It is just at bedroom level chords seen to get a little chopped off at the end. I am using a Slash cab (I got it with the original Slash head back in the 90s) Anyway, thank you for your time.

The noise drops out between chords when playing slow. Might be a nice effect sometimes. But, not too cool all the time.

That sounds quite odd.

Thanks. I guess I'd better consider packing it up and sending it out to get it looked at.... Think I'll wait until the YJM100 arrives though. Should be here in a month or so I hope. I really dislike trying to get an amp fixed. When I got my Slash signature amp back in the 90s I lost it for 2 months while they fixed an issue it had. Maybe they are faster now. LMAO. Thanks again.

I've read there are strange volume problems with the attenuation on a full, but that may have been only the first few off the line and I don't know if what your describing was actually the problem. Try looking through all the forums (here, MLP, gearpage, marshallforum, etc).

that's been already discussed in another thread in this forum. It might happen when the gain is full, just back the gain a little bit as it is due to excessive overdrive but nothing wrong with the amp.

There were not any problems with the attenuator full at all...only some people reported volume changes due to inconsistent main supplies when the attenuator is set at very ow powers plus nothing have been modified, the 2300 amps are all the same.

It is a ll OK :-). What I mean is that the blocking distortion (noise gate effect) could be fixed but the fix will be to lower the gain range which is the same as backing the gain knob a little bit. The downside of the mod is that with some other guitars with lower output we won't have the full gain range so I'd recommend not fixing anything.

Sorry I missed this in the other thread. However I am not sure it applies because my gain is only at 12:00, the master is at 3:00 and the power is at about 8:00 the mode is AFD. You did bring up an interesting point which I have just tested. I had been using a Strat (no humbuckers) but the effect is much less pronounced when I use an SG or LP with humbuckers. So, maybe I'll just stay away from the single coil pickups when I play at low volumn... Now I wonder if I am going to have the same issue with the YJM100. Thank you.

well, if that's the case and you aren't using any external boost it should be worse with humbucker pickups as they have higher output...
Have you rebiased the amp?

Sounds odd. Can it be a bad preamp valve? I always play with the EPS at it´s lowest position at home and i´ve never experienced anything like that. I have the preamp volume at 8 though and a Les Paul with PAF´s.

The Afd100 has not left my house since I have had it and I bias it once a week. I think that should be ok? There are no "bias fault" leds lit. I have not opened the back or done any tube swaping. I have tried it with 3 different cabs, but I have settled on the Slash vintage 30's cab. When I use my LP with a paf in the neck postition (and a dual sound/super distortion) in the bridge there does not really seem to be an issue. I will be having an opportunity to try a different Afd100 next week. I guess that will pretty much let me know if it is just my amp. This is NOT really a big thing to me. I don't play at bedroom volumn often. I have had the amp since early March and only done it a couple of times. I was just curious. Thanks again.
