Hi guys,

do you have some experience with Seymour duncan SSL-4 quarter pound pickups?
I would like to buy to bridge and neck position SSL-4 and to middle SSL-4 like RW/RP.

I have mexican strat from 1994 with poplar body and maple neck.. I play to Marshall MA100c

Any ideas?

Best advice i can give you is let your ears decide. I do know that poplar is a very light porus wood that doesnt have alot of density to it, and this wood can affect the frequency response of the guitar. This is why i say to listen because the new pickups may positively add or subtract to that effect.

Welcome to the TONE QUEST.

I've never used them myself, but i could never really get an idea from the descriptions on the web sites or even from people for that matter. I have to try them. Thats the only way i know what works with my setup. Needless to say over 30 years i have went through boxes of pups. :laugh

Fourtunately i found what i like and dont experiment anymore.

Duncans are good. Give em shot and post back with how you think about them.

I have one in the bridgeposition in my strat. I've had it a long time and it works well. Very loud and perfect for heavy rock.

I might add it´s a high output PU and as it´s a single coil it´s pretty noisy.
But it rocks like hell, I really like it. Saw Blackmore using it so....

Blackmore only uses the bridge and neck pickups.
Sometime around 1977-1978 his technician removed the poles from the middle pickup and wired it permanently out of phase with the volume knob (i.e. middle pickup is always on, regardless of bridge or neck being selected).
This is called a Dummy Coil as it has no magnets, therefore doesn't sense the strings. It's only function is act as a hum cancelling coil to the real pickups.
The additional coil does slightly change the tone, but you still get 90% single coil tone.
You can see and hear this configuration on most of Blackmore's work from about 1977 to 1992 when he switched to Lace Gold.
His WORST period was 1987-1989 when he flirted with hot rails...... sounded NOTHING like his classic single coil Strat tone.

Yeah, I only use bridge/neck also.
Though not with the electrical gizmos.
And the neck PU is a hot rail!
So my guitar is more or less "dynamics go out the window" :bgrin
