Pickup suggestions for a Les Paul

Postby Shane » 18 Jul 2010, 02:32

Hi guys. I have a 92 Les Paul Standard with the original 498T bridge pick-up. Lately, I have not been entirely happy with the sound through the 2266. My other guitar is an Angus Young Signature SG. I really like this guitar (only complaint is its not very well shielded). The Angus Young Signature SG sounds great with the VM, especially if your like 70s style classic rock. I am thinking about swapping out the 498 on my Les Paul for something else... I like a big bottom end with good treble definition (which I can get from the AY signature pick-up).I use 9 or 10-46 gauge Elixir strings exclusively. Any pick-up suggestions that would suit the Les Paul and VM classic rock sound? Thanks
JMP-1H; Peavey Classic 30 Head + 2x12 cab, 1992 Les Paul Std; 2008 Angus Young Signature SG; Washburn WP50 (lawsuit LP); Fender 72 Thinline Telecaster (Japan)

If you like the AY signature then you can put one of these into your LP. Otherwise if you like that 70´s type tone and want a clear treble I´d go for a PAF type pickup. The Classic 57 or the Burstbucker wich is not waxed I think wich may cause some unwanted feedback.

I am a fan of the classic 57's for that genre with a LP. If you want the best though look into pickups from Bare Knuckle of the UK, no better made pickup IMO. The Mules are a very popular choice for a LP.

Go to this web site to listen to many videos on the Bare Knuckle pickups they offer, I have the War Pigs.

I go for WCR pups in my les-pauls. One has the Crossroads set and one has the Peter Green / Gary Moore set.
I'd agree with Mats A though, if you're happy with the AY pups in your SG why not try them in your Les-Paul?
If you're going for a classic rock tone, rather than a metal tone, I'd stick to PAF type pups. They suit the VM really well IMO.
I'll give you everything but my guitar and my car.....

'57 Classic Plus would be good, I always got a good Angus tone from that pickup. Burstbucker 3 might even be pretty cool to try. Sounds like you want some good output but that the 498T just doesn't have the right EQ for you.

What pick-ups did you get to put in your new Les Paul anyway? Just curious.

My guitar was used and came with Tom holmes paf's installed. They sound great but will break the bank at $800 a set. Not something I would have bought on my own, but since they are in there im keepin em!

Not surprized that you don't like the 498T. I hated that pickup in my 99 LP. I switched out to Lollar Imperials in both positions. This is a PAF style and it made a huge difference to my tone. No more muddy/fizzy sounds and much more articulate and controllable. I cannot recommend them enough (although I might be temped by the Bare Knuckle Mules next time).
