YJM and EVH tones

Postby qbalzuo » 14 Nov 2012, 15:07

Hello everyone,

A question just like in title, could YJM handle some early (VH I) tones?
If anyone could record some Eddie chops on this amp, I'll be grateful.

I know it's not the question that you asked, but gtrman sure got some killer EVH sounds out of an AFD100.

Yes I like the David Bray amps, they have their own tone, a honkyness to them.
SV20 Plexi, JTM45, YJM plexi, KK800, JTM60, JTM1, JMP1, JCM1, DSL1, JVM1.

Yup, it sounds huge.

How would you compare these two amps, the YJM and this Bray Mod Plexi?

I think with the right guitar, fingers and mindset you would get that sound out of the YJM.
The build in Reverb would probably be a bit too dark though for that EVH sound so you would want to drop an external effects unit into the loop.

My YJM100 can do some great Van Halen tones especially when running all JJ 12AX7's in the preamp spots, but if you want an amp that lives for Van Halen stuff then get a Bray, Splawn or Granger for around $2,000. You could also get a Friedman Marsha for $3,500. Those amps will sound just like Van Halen.....if you can play just like Van Halen. If not, you can still have a heck of a lot of fun perfecting your inner Van Halen with any of those amps; or a YJM100 for that matter. A YJM100 will only sound like Yngwie if you can play like him.
Friedman Smallbox 50, Fender Yngwie Malmsteen Strat, Fender Jeff Beck Strat, Fender 63 Relic Strat, Fender 56 Heavy Relic Strat and a bunch of pedals.

Only Eddie himself could play like him :bgrin and I dont wanna copy him either. I'm looking for some tasty guitar tones from 80's for example early VH, George Lynch, Warren DeMartini.
I've heard about Splawn Quickrod, but I think it has too much compressed sound, like a high gain amp and It's too expensive for me.
In my country there aren't too many 'hot rodded' Marshall amps and I thought that YJM would be a nice one.

Does anybody got some VH, RATT or Dokken clips on YJM? :bgrin

A YJM100 will easily get you there. I love Dokken and all of the 80's stuff. My YJM100 nails that stuff. Sometimes I use a TS808 overdrive pedal to boost the amp instead of the on-board booster, but either way you can get those sounds with a YJM100. I used to own both a Splawn Quickrod and a Splawn Competition which were both GREAT amps. I still prefer my YJM100 over the Splawns or any amp I have ever played through before.

Hey there,

I'm neither a YJM nor EVH clone (as the attached video will attest to), but I bought the YJM because, for me, it seemed more capable of producing early VH tones than the AFD100 (which, don't get me wrong, is still a kickass amp). I've recorded with both, and found the YJM EQ range to be a bit more pleasing to my ear than the AFD.

Here's a clip of me running my YJM through a 1960 cab, boosted, using a Line 6 POD XT in the effects loop simply for effects. I love the overdriven tone you can get out of this amp, which tosses harmonics off the fretboard like crazy, but never gets unusably gainy...

Is that builded-in DOD or some other boost pedal?
