Seems like I remember reading it was a combination of OD1 & OD2. I know it has plenty of gain. I usually don't set the preamp above 2.5 - 3 and I like gain. The clean side holds together even on the highest settings with my 59 Stratocaster.

That is the big problem with the JVM. Too much gain. You should be able to turn up the gain because that makes the tone fatter.

With the gain at 3 or 4 (on the dial) on OD 2 it is thick/fat & creamy no need to go any higher on the gain and the real beauty is that when you turn the vol knob on the guitar down it cleans up like an old Marshall and remains warm sounding and great tone.
Put an eq in the loop with a small mid boost and its like OD 1 and cuts through no problem. The only difference between OD1 and 2 is the mid curve is slightly lower on OD 2.

Doing so you must use an eq pedal. With age i've gotten lazy don't like having a lot of pedals and stuff. Also with gain on 3-4 the tone is thinner than if you could turn gain up to 7-8. But the OD2 on the JVM sounds good. But if you want that more regular Marshall tone OD1 is the way to go i believe.

Im the same about pedals, i only have four, TC polytune and Xotic bb mb in front and a TC Flashback delay and MXR 10 Eq in the loop.
I find i have to turn the bass down/nearly off when i turn the gain up to 3 or 4 on the dial because it gets thick on OD 2 Orange using a Strat and L P so i am surprised you find it a bit thin, i am using a 215 combo so maybe thats the difference but i find the same when i use my 1936 cab with V 30s.
To me less is more with this amp, even my Mid & Treble are below 5 and pres & res off. I dont play metal just classic 60/70/80s etc.
