Marshall with the most gain

Postby Lavox » 20 May 2010, 07:32

Right gents,

Would you be so kind as to put these in order for me please - I'm trying to win an argument here! :numchucks
From lowest amount to highest amount, which Marshall has the most gain available.

JTM/45, JCM800, any JMP, JCM900, DSL, TSL, VM2466, SILVER JUBILEE, AFD100, SUPER100JH ?

I'll let you know my thoughts once there are a few replies.

Cheers.

I should say - as they come standard. No mods or valve upgrades or boosts. Just all out dimed goodness :Thumbs
Guitars - 2002 Gibson Les Paul Standard, 1996 Gibson Les Paul Studio, 1993 Fender Std Stratocaster USA, 1983 Squier Stratocaster MIJ, 1991 Washburn N2 MIJ

I vote TSL if it's dimed stock. I would say runner up would be certain JCM 900s such as the SL-X. This by no means it will be the best sounding, just the most stock gain on tap.

Amp Whore would be the best one to ask this too. (member Tnjpekar)

ok, were talking 10/10 here, right?

from my own experience from lowest on tap to highest. I should also clarify that on the 900 series and the jube, unless you are talking slx much of what you percieve as gain is actually distortion created by a diode circuit (also on some 800's but not as prominent
jmt-45, jmp, super 100 jh (really just a ptp jmp tone wise imo), 800, jube, 900, vm, dsl/tsl

I am not familliar with the slash amp, but if I have heard the rumors correctly it is to be a take off on what is referred to as old 39, a modded 100t from the 70's that he, lynch and a bunch of others used on albums in the 80's. That particular mod sounds to me like the trace at voodoo mod with an added 12ax7, dual cascading gain mod to v1 and v1a, and both a tone stack and pi ganged master (I have the dual masters on my jmp, and lee jackson was famous for them on all his amps)
http://www.slashsworld.com/equipment/th ... ll-o-mine/
if that is the case, it would probably have the best TONE gain wise, very closely followed by the vm
again, you stipulated stock, so I am factoring in both that, AND the tubes you would be able to get today.
You didn't mention the JVM410, which blows them all away in organic gain and will thump your chest without sounding germanium processed imo. Truly the king of gain in the marshall arsenal.
if you had mullards in the jmp, el34's in the power section not 6550's (as I personally prefer) then you could bump that amp past the 800 imo, but only if you had it ganged and dime'd.
and then you would need a 1 mile guitar chord to hear it without killing yourself, but then you would fry your cabs since the amp was stock accompanied by greenback loaded cabs which wouldn't last long under that kind of spl pressure.

see, your question is kind of loaded in the sense of what speakers are you pairing it with. I am assuming what marshall offered at the time of issue.

then again, just my opinion

Outstanding reply man. Thank you very much for that.

Not only did you stick them in order, but also gave a very clear explanation and educated opinion on the "best" tone at high gain.

Much gratitude buddy :Cheers

My 2-cents: The JCM800KK
Those KT-88's really add a lot of extra push to the gain.
With the Preamp dimed and the BEAST option selected this amp kicks way into metal territory.

1959 Randy Rhoades JMP signature amp, a beast!
Have tried one at my store, but didn't by it! Even in a arena it is still a beast!

Wow I ventured away from the JMD side to see what else is going on else where; what a f**king jem of a write up. You my friend know your stuff in amp and that link; OMG. I love GL's tone on those Dokken records and would kill to have have that tone. IMO there is something very sweet and very "Marshall" in regards to GL's tone and its a tone I have been chasing for decades. So I went to MF and AMS and all regular stock is gone so it looks like going to Ebay and pay inflated auction prices to grab a AFD100.

Thank you so much........

In one of the videos on the AFD100 web site Slash and Eric Valentine producer say they brought in an amp modified by Tim Casswell for the sessions but it didn´t feel great or right to play.

JVM2 Series I reckon. Too much gain on tap lol. No need for the dial to go to 10.

Let me throw a wrench into this conversation, what about non Marshall amps include? I love the ability of my 5150 to go from clean to all natural gain...
