What should i do first???

Postby TheLesPaul101 » 23 May 2011, 14:51

Hey guys. This is not a question on gear or tones. I'm wondering if i should save up and buy a guitar first or buy a new amp and pedals first. If I get the guitar first i can go to my local music store and play their gear with my guitar. but if i buy the amp and pedalboard first i will have some time to save for the guitar.
Guitars: Fender CS Stratocaster, Guild GAD C-1, Morelli "Flaxwood Custom"

Chicken has to come before the egg, guitar. Lot of good amps to get you by for under $300 until you can buy your stack. :Thumbs

Depends on your point of view...

A proper guitar is more fun to play with... but a Gibson Les Paul Supreme Deluxe One-off High-End that costs a staggering 4000000$ will sound like shit if you torture it with a shit amplifier.

Now an Epiphone, Squire, Yamaha and other low-end guitars will however sound pretty good if you have a proper amplifier... but it's not so comfortable to play. So which do you prefer?

I myself choose the guitar first, but as a principle I tend to think that a proper amp is more important. Especially if you want to play with a band.

Yeah try to negotiate prices if you bought all at once, i did that when i came over to the states and visited Guitar Center. I bet the sales assistant was thinking "Cheeky fucking brits". Anywho, it got me a free MXR classic distortion pedal haha.

Guitar. Not all guitar & amp &/or effects combinations work. I know you have your heart set on the 335 so I'd get that and then use it to test amps and effects to find the right combination for you. Sounds like you're gonna be spending a pretty good chunk of money on gear, it's a hell of a lot cheaper in the long run to be patient and do it right the first time.

Definitely the guitar. Think of how much you'll be able to learn and play, while saving for/trying out amps, as opposed to doing it the other way around.

And another thing. When picking out your guitar be sure to play it with it unplugged. A good way to tell a good guitar from a bad one is to hear how it sounds acoustically. I often play my guitars unplugged and enjoy it. You'll be fine if you have to wait a bit for a good amp.

I agree and something else I do is try to find a shop that has Fender combo's like the twins. IMO they have the brightest and cleanest clean out of all the amps out there; so I run the guitar through a Fender amp clean first with everything at neutral (or 5) except for volume.

When I purchased my Variax I was lucky enough to have a dealer within 120 miles to my home. I went to the dealer with my PodXT Live and plugged into a clean Fender with the Variax plugged into the PodXT Live. They also had a Fender Strat VM (the guitar with the roland hookup and onboard acoustic tones). I compared both guitars and the salesman was starting to get pissed because it was into the 2nd hour of comparing. When I finally reached my decision while the Fender felt better in my hands the Variax sounded better. This music store promised to match yet since this was the only Variax in the tristate area they added a additional 150.00 to the retail price. I spoke with the manager and they held on the price. I left the store and purchased the same guitar at AMS and as luck would prevaile they had a B Stock available and the guitar would have been around 750.00 or so I eventually got that Variax for 400.00 new and still have it.

Good luck on your search, there are many here who take a while to buy a guitar. Do your research and good luck. In conclusion I also agree a good amp will make a cheaper guitar sound good and a cheaper amp can make a better guitar sound like crap.
