Happy Anniversary

Happy Anniversary to those who survived Hurricane Katrina. It is something I never wish to go through ever again.

My mother and Step-father had a house literally a block from the beach in Long Beach Mississippi (near Biloxi). Thankfully my mom was in Michigan visiting my aunt at the time but my Step-father stayed.
He got busy boarding up neighbors houses and didn't have time to evacuate, ended up bunkering down in a neighbors basement. When it was over their house and the one they were at were the only two building standing for miles. For two days we could not get in touch with him and braced for the worst. Finally he was able to borrow a satellite phone from a National Guardsman to call my mom. It was very scary for all of us.
They bought a house much further inland afterward.

Really, I live in Long Beach now and have since this past October. Its a cool little town for sure. Kinda quiet and everyone knows me for sure (the board is still out if this is a good thing or now). I have some pretty wild pictures of the aftermath and even though they show destruction it doesn't really convey the damages and how widespread they actually were. My life changed after that storm, as did many around here. I read yesterday that FEMA is almost out of money with all of these storms happening. IMO if they want to have more money maybe we should get out of Afgan and Iraq since we are not wanted there; anyways.
