Cell phone security

Postby surfnorthwest » 14 Dec 2011, 13:25

Man did I have an eye opener today. I attended a class on new spy tactics and part of it dealt with things that can be done to you simply because you own a smart phone with gps.

Moral of the story.

1. Assume now that anytime you have what you think is a private conversation chances are high you are being recorded and maybe even video recorded

2. Never give your phone to anyone to touch. There is software that can be installed in seconds that runs behind the scene that listens to ever word, records every keystroke (gain passwords), turns your GPS ON when your phone says its off allow you to be tracked, even can remotley open the microphone on your phone to listen in even if its not a phone call. Thing that blew me away was how remotly a picture can be taken on your phone and sent to the spy.

3. Email, yea they get a copy of everything you get PLUS have the ability to email using your accounts.

Many different ways this gets onto your smartphone undetected by you. Currently iPhone users are much more vunerable then droid users but both are far from secure. Smartphone security sucks.

Think you have a weak battery, maybe someone needs to take access of your phone for a minute so they shut it down in appearence only, maybe they need you to reboot.

The class went through a bunch of other things but the demonstrations shocked me. The incentive is theft and information, information on you has many buyers.

How do you stop it. Keep your cell phone out of reach of anyone, research the agreements on your downloads, or better yet fuck owning a cell phone or letting one anywhere near you.

Keep your cell phone on in your bedroom, chances are someone has a recording of you banging the girlfriend or you playing with yourself.

A cell phone is a better spy then the FBI and millions of us have no clue. I can assure you that the government does and so do many criminals waiting to wipe you out. Also PayPal is not your pal, millions of dollars stolen move legally over their network.

Also lets not forget about Carrier IQ thats installed on the majority of the phones used to track everything you do and read all your text messages without your permission.

Advice was don't use one and if you do assume the risks. The security sucks, not like at home where you can secure your network. Isn't it stange that there is a lack of apps for security.

Information on people is worth a lot of money. Amazon is selling millions of Kindle Fires that are wifi enabled. These devices are all gateways to information.

Absolutely right, it is there. Also almost any app you use has some stuff about it also. Funny thing is that we are paying them billions a year to do it. I am with Sprint and of course the "assure me" that they do not share or use any of the information... really.

Unfortunately I have to need the technology.

This is very disturbing, but I am NOT surprised.
