I shouldn't have done it . . .

Postby reverbbb » 22 Apr 2013, 13:13

Yesterday, I was noodling around with my R9 & JMP-1C. I have had it for a while and had gotten used to the sound for the most part. I made the mistake of attempting to compare the sound to my 1979 50W MV head with 4x12 greeback cabinet.

I knew there would be an obvious difference. But I was not prepared for as much difference as I heard. First thing I noticed, I could never get the JMP-1C to clean up until I turned the volume way down. At that point, I could not hardly hear the amp clearly. The edge was gone (clean, but with no edge/bite). At that volume, it was fairly uninspiring. Plus it still sounded very different from my '79.

Then it dawned on me. The characteristics that was not so convincing was the 10" speaker. Oddly, I have ran the output of the JMP-1C into the 1960AC and got a very similar sound.

I have been a big fan of these 1W amps. But I cannot see using these 1W amps as replacements for a 50W amp either live or recordings, hoping to get "that" sound. Now, if I wanted "that 1W" sound, then the 1W are the only way to get it. But the fullness of the 4x12 with 50W head is "MY SOUND".

Now my Strat sounds a bit more dynamic and I like that sound. But I am more of a humbucker player than a single coil.

Just an observation. It has not made me unhappy with these amps. But I think I will be giving my 50W MV more stage time in the future.

I always urge people to try these 1 watt amps in low output mode into a tube power amp. Run your combo into a fx return of a 100 or 50 watt amp and see what you think. Not really fair to compare a 1 watt to a 50 watt.

You are right of course, I tried my JMP1 through a 1960a when I bought it, and thought its not got much bass! So I ended up having it modded.
Anyway, the way I look at it is, like you said, at 1 watt in a bedroom studio, these sound better than a 50w plexi turned down or attenuated, and get a very close recorded tone (with reverb and the mix) to the full size head, but yes still not quite the same.

This is why I am glad that all I have at the moment is low wattage amps. Even though I think each one sounds great,i agree they don't push much air. Hard to compete at only 1 watt. I enjoy playing each one by itself and my ears are tuned to that but running them through my PA is what I enjoy best. Sorta along the lines your talking about. Much bigger and fuller. Makes a1 watt amp sound like several cranked up. I get spoiled on that very quick.

I have mic'd my JMP-1C and piped it through my home studio monitors (M-Audio BX8a) with a touch of large room reverb effect. This is an excellent sound. But there is still not much clean. But it sort of sounds like Roland electronic drums in a live situation. Not a bad sound, but something is different from the normal ambiance. If that makes any sense.

Im sure. My setup I mentioned is strictly for home use with backing tracks. Just perfect. Most of the time I just use a TC Delay through the mixer but every now and then I throw in some Chorus also.
