50th anniversary handwired amps

Postby pat_don_el_lee » 12 Apr 2012, 23:51

I know Marshall is doing a limited run of handwired bluesbreaker amps for their 50th anniversary. But why not offer handwired versions from all of their vintage line for regular production? They already do the 1959hw, so why not add the jtm45, 1987x, and 1962 bluesbreaker as accurate, handwired options. Price it a few hundred more than the pcb version like the 1959hw is over the 1959slp and I'm sure nobody will complain.

I'm not really sure if I'll get the 1987X this year or next year... or if it is dismissed for distant future for the mythological 50th Anniversary amp from Marshall... but I could sure settle for a 1987XHW...

I'm planning on getting rid of my JCM800 for that. I'm not really a collector... I just want good and good looking amps I can rely on... even if the amp will stay mostly at home. The JCM800 1987 is really cool and should be pretty close to the 1987X actually... so I want the new one :roll

So yes... a 1987XHW would suffice :shredder

You all have to ask yourself a serious question here, if you can already by the 1987 with the PCB for $1699 would you really run to the store and pay another $400 for the HW version?

The 2061, 1959 abd 1974 can be had today in a HW option. For example the 1959SLP sells at $2400 where the HW version sells at $2800. I bet Marshall thinks there is not much of a market for that, but I don't know. I would bet however that if you really wanted a HW JTM45 or 1987 you could special order one, I bet they would do it. Someone in the UK should call and ask.

In the end I am in the camp that a PCB is just as good. There is a vintage factor and cool factor however that makes the HW attractive. Easier to mod also but I am not into mod'ing my amps. If I really wanted one I would try to special order one.

I know they would sound just about the same but for durability I will keep trusting a HW more than PCB.
I have argued this before so I will not go too deep into it... I how PCB electronics is produced/put together and I know how HW electronics are put together.
I also know that back in the days most things were HW and lasted for decades, now days most things are assembled by robots and lasts for years...
There are always exceptions of course.

So would I spend a few extra bucks on something that would have better second hand value if I sell and that I have faith in will last longer... yes I would.
1987XHW FTW... I will not pay ridiculous amount of money for this of course... which I assume special orders will.

Besides, Norwegian stores seem to be very little interested in getting special orders... and most companies I like (Fender, Gibson, Marshall, 65amps, Rivera, Koch, Boss, Dimarzio...etc, etc...) do not offer me any chance of buying directly. Rules, agreements and regulations. I have to go through an official distributor.

On the Sweetwater website the SLP is $2450 and the HW is $2700. Only a $250 difference. Not bad

sorry Surf but I disagree in my opinion in these amps the real deal its not the ptp stuff but the accuracy with which they replicate original trannies, in the HW serie trannies are way beyond (and better sounding) their pcb counterparts, the trannies are the magic : you can swap an original JTM45 board in a '81 JCM800 and it will sound as a JCM800.
Also think to all boutique builders... where are they making money ?? with JTM45, '67 and '68 Plexi replicas and none of these are in Marshall catalog currently, the 1959HW its a '69 replica (the brightest plexi ever) while the SLP sounds good but its not 100% like the '68 I used to have (and thank god I recovered all the money when I sold it)

PS : alas they wont do a special JTM45HW for me (I asked in the past)

nothing against Marshall its my personal point of view from a very loyal (and happy) customer and as we all know.... we always want more ;-)

Sweetwater is inflating the price on Marshall amps because they are offering some sort of financing deal, I believe.

I don't believe so, Guitar Center has the same prices online, without 18 month financing.
