6101 Combo Cab Project

:yea Greetings,

Well, as some of you guys know, "I Love my 6101".

All of the rest of my amps sit and gather dust unless someone stops by to jam.

So, if I go out, I want to take it with me.

The thing is, it's king hell HEAVY, what with the full head, 12" Massive speaker, and full marshall cab.

Thus begins the combo/cab project.

I want to separate the head and cab. Don't alter the speaker cab just take the head out and put it in a cabinet. Then use the speaker cab as a stack. I found that I can get an empty head cab built for about, $175. Then would need marshall appointments like corners, grill and logo. So probably another $50 so $200 to $225. Thought it still wouldn't have real marshall tolex.

Was also looking for broken amps that I could just use the cab from.
From what I could figure out the 12" AVT combo was about the right size to work from.
So, I picked up a used AVT50 for a little over $100.
Now I have all of the parts needed to make a proper Marshall cab for it.
It will need to be shortened both in height and width, and maybe add a little at the back if it's not deep enough.

The first thing will be to remove all of the hardware, then go back and watch the factory tour to see what temp they heat the cabs to when they put the tolex on. Then remove the tolex and start cutting the cab down.

:Cheers Got the hardware off and didn't have to heat the cab to remove the tolex.
Just peeled very carefully. Got to love the factory tour vid where the whole process is explained.

Ready for cutting, have to be careful not to get the pre-glued surfaces full of sawdust..

Going to have to find some good brass tacks for the corners.
Marshall uses some sort of expanding nails that I don't think I can reuse.

.

Thanks for the words of encouragement guys.

Got the cab cut down, waiting for the glue to dry then time to recover the cab.

My work schedule is heavy for the end of the week so we'll see . . .

I'm already looking towards the remaining cabinet.

I've been building 6G15 spring reverb amps and the next one is destined for the empty space in the 6101 cab.

I have a great deal of respect for people who can do what you are doing. This stuff is beyond me but I enjoy watching the progress.

Ah, but the true question is, "Will you respect me for the noise I'll make with this shit" . . .

Time will tell, I'm not afeart of making a video or two.

Preliminary testing shows a good fit

Ooooooo, look at the tuuuubessss . . .. . ... .. .

I so love the compact format of the combo head.

Needed to add 3/4" to the depth, pretty simple, glue and nail the strip on, then trim with a jig saw.

Can be rough since it's under tolex and a corner cap.

Reconfiguring the grille is going to be a challenge, they might as well just have sewn it together with staples.

Haven't seen that one yet, got a link?

Had a go at reattaching the tolex but even though I heated the cab in the oven the glue was less than sufficient

On to a bit of additional contact cement . . .
