6100LM Crackling clean channel only...I think...

Postby LiveFreeOrDie » 08 Dec 2013, 09:44

Setting up for a gig last night. It was bitter cold, but i let it warm up for almost an hour. I think i only hear it on clean channel, but maybe the dirty channel hides it. When hitting a chord, it cracklies at the end, not at beginning of chord. Almost sounds like static crackle. I switched heads to my back up, and no issues. Is that enough info to get some technical advise from ths very knowledgeable forum? Thank you.
Many Marshall's, and I want more.

Is your back up another 6100LM?
I would swap the tubes first.

Update: I brought the amp in the house last night. I let it acclimate for about 6 hours or so while I slept. Now it isn't making the noise as it did last night setting up for gig. Is it possible that it was still too cold? I'm kind of stumped here.

Hard to say LFOD, crackling is usually a contact issue. I would clean the power tubes sockets and have a preamp tube or two on hand just in case.

One hour is more than enough time to warm up any amp!
But cold and humidity could cause bad contacts.

It may have just been a fluke bad contact connection or cable issue.
Maybe try a good electronics contact cleaner on everything; plugs, jacks, tube pins and socket prongs. Check the prongs for tightness. Also check insturment and interconnect cables for problems.

Maybe there was an issue with condensation in some of the contact connectors. Going from an extremely cold to warm enviroment can definately cause this and it might not evaporate in only an hour or so. I saw weird things with alot of gear in northern Maine in the winter months. Going from anywhere from 25 to -40 below into a warm house cause stange things to happen.

Yeah, I tend to agree with you. Played it again a few minutes ago. No issues whatsoever. I think some condensation was in there somewhere.
