Another note, I always seem to get V30's to cut the best live with the mids turned up.
Many Marshall's, and I want more.

Ok, so if JJ tubes tend to be dark, and I want to brighten the amp a bit (all 7 of my preamps are JJ's), do I put a brighter tube in V1 or V2? Somewhere else?

The two critical first tubes in the 6100 are v-1 and v-2. V-1 is ONLY for the clean channel and v-2 is the first in the line for channel 2 and 3.

Well, from recent retubing I am pretty disappointed that I really can't hear much difference between tubes.

It's pretty subtel.

I heard it when I changed from a crappy 12ax7 that sounded fizzy in my Vox AC-4 to a TAD 12AX7, there is only 1 pre-amp tube so I think it was easier to hear.

But changing from a set of JJ 12ax7s to surf's recommended tube set, can't hear much difference...

I haven't given up though, when I have time I'm going to change out 1 valve at a time and listen further.

The new drop down front panel (see pic) makes tube rolling a breeze.

Part of the problem I feel lies in not knowing what nuance I should be listening for, it all sounds good to me.

Grind, grit, harmonics, low end, high end, mids, ?

Speaker choice has a far greater impact on the sound.

Check it out hear, direct line out, no speaker, Link to 12AX7 thread, sound clip at bottom 3rd page
