Old DSL 401 Thoughts

Postby rineanna » 11 Mar 2013, 15:21

Anyone have any experience with the old 40w DSL? I know that it has EL84's which is odd and a Celestion 70 80....I might have a chance to get one.....should I?

I used to have one, my first Valve amp. Anyway its versatile, has 8 valves, a stock T75 speaker (not a good choice with this amp) often upgraded to a V30 speaker which is a good choice for this amp. So if its a good price I'd say go for it.

Thanks Al, :Thumbs

Anyone else have any opinions?
Were they made in England or the Far East?

(post should be in Marshall JCM area)

I use my VM for larger rooms and for smaller clubs I have always used the DSL401. Great compact amp with plenty of ooomph. It has the three very usable channels but I have set mine so that I can use it the same way that I use the VM, OD1 with enough gain to solo at full volume on the guitar, roll back the guitar volume for clean. Mine mainly gets used for Classic Rock covers.
As soon as I got mine I changed the stock speaker for a Vintage 30, and I also have a Weber Beam Blocker fitted.
Depending on year of manufacture, there are two different possible bias settings for this amp. If you change the power valves dont just search the web for bias settings and go, a simple check of a couple of resistor values will tell you which bias value to use.
A great little amp!

p.s. Made in England.
