Tried the new DSL

Postby Mats A » 06 Apr 2014, 21:32

Last night i tried out the new DSL. I think it sounds great. Much better than the old JCM2000 DSL that in my opinion was a bit papery sounding. If you turned up the treble on the old DSL you mostly got more fizz and you just couldn´t open up the tone. This new one i think sound quite different and more open sounding. It reminds more of the tone my Plexi has but with lots more gain. Shame it's not made in the UK and the box is MDF. Wasn´t it something with the chassis also. I know it shouldn´t matter. If it sounds good it sounds good. But still...

Good review, also Matt if you get a chance, try an Xotic BB pedal on the crunch channel, its so woody and very nearly as good as the JVMJS crunch channel.
I agree its a shame its not made any longer here in the UK, but I notice the EVH 50w head is also made in Vietnam, I wonder if its the same factory? no one complains about that amp.

Yep, the EVH 50 watt WAS made in Vietnam. But, production has since been moved to the same location as the 100 watt version, Mexico.

I like the 2000 DSL better.
Many Marshall's, and I want more.

Why is it better? I think there is more life in the new DSL's tone.

Played my DSL today and i must say it sounds fantastic! I like it more than the Satriani JVM. Shame it in a way dels like a cheap Marshall for beginners. The tone is really great from this amp.

Maybe I should have said prefer instead of better. I have to admit, I have never owned the new DSL, and only played one 3-4 times. Both of my DSL's are so punchy. Mids cuts through phenomenally. Plenty of gain, chunky, leads sound great. I play them both through Greenies and V30's. Sounds great through both. I prefer the V30's. To me the new DSL sounded more modern in a gain way. Maybe a little more thin. I think the new DSL is a decent amp, and I would be able to gig one easily. I just prefer the 2000 version. With that being said, I have never owned a Marshall I didn't like.

I think the new DSL has a more attacky open sound than the JCM 2000 DSL. I think the old is a little bit more muffled. The new one sounds livelier. A bit more 2203 or 1959. It's not thin sounding at all. Maybe that is more in the feel when you play the amp.

Wish it was UK made though. The Digital Reverb and Resonance control although i don't use it is really an upgrade. Spring Reverb doesn't sound that good i think.

Still will the new DSL cope with gigging. How is the quality of it really? Got to be something to make it cheaper. Even though it cost more than the cheaper amps. In Sweden it costs more than two thirds of a JVM 410H.
