DSL40C....8ohm.....power loss?

Hi guys,

I have a DSL40C...I want to swap out the stock speaker with a Cannabis Rex which really shined in my Fender Blues JR amp. It is an 8-ohm model and I know the DSL40 can handle the switch by adjusting the speaker input on the back of the cabinet..... but will I lose any output/volume by not installing a 16-ohm rated speaker?

Thanks,

Tom

No, you will be fine. Just plug into an 8-ohm socket.

I'm actually thinking about trying out a Veteran 30 in mine, the speaker in there now is 16 ohm but would there be any advantage to using the 8 ohm version?

Not advantage, not disadvantage either.
I would try that Veteran 30 (16 ohm) first.

Hi...thanks for the response. Marshall service states no problem with the 8ohm switch as the DSL40 can handle the rating. If anything, the 8ohm swap will sound louder. Their response:

"Thanks for your request. This model can operate at 8 ohms. You would have to move the speaker cable from the 16 ohm input into one of the 8 ohm inputs on the amp. If you did change the internal speaker to 8 ohms you would not be able to connect an external speaker to run with the internal speaker. The amp has a minimum load of 8 ohms."

"It will not cut the volume down. It will probably seem louder."

I will install tomorrow and give impressions.......

Thanks to all,

Tom

Wow!...what a difference the Cannabis Rex made! The 70/80 speaker, while not too bad, is not up to snuff for this amps potential. The Rex allows all channels to shine so far. The 70/80 is a cheaply-made speaker....no heft to it (in my opinion) and looks poorly made. On the other hand, the Rex is superbly made and feels like a million dollars when you hold it. The 70/80 weighs 6.8 lbs. with a 31 oz. magnet weight......the Rex weighs 8.2 lbs. and has a 38 oz. magnet. Freq.response is 70Hz-5kHz, and the 70/80 is 80Hz-5kHz. I also could not tell the difference in volume level between the 8 vs. 16 ohm. No problem here. I will update as time goes on.....................................

Oh cool! Now I am really thinking about buying a Veteran 30 to try, the only thing is that it is non-returnable. So you are saying given the same settings the after-market speaker blows away the 70/80??

I have no experience with the Veteran 30......but the speaker switch to the Eminence Cannabis Rex was justified by a wide margin. It tightened up the bottom end nicely with no high-end shrill vs. the stock speaker. It did the same with my Fender Blues Jr. as well. Where are you located? I bought mine on Amazon.com in the United States. If you don't like it you can always return/exchange.

Tom

UPDATE: The Veteran 30 came today. I installed it after work and I've been playing on and off for hours. WOW what a difference!! Its so much beefier with better low end and fuller overall tone. First of all, the Veteran 30 is much heavier than the 70/80 and has a much bigger magnet. I was shocked when I took it our of the box and compared them. The 70/80 didn't sound bad, but it sounded flubby at times and I was never able to EQ out all of the shrillness. The Veteran 30 solves all of this. Its no longer overly trebly even with the treble turned higher! In fact, Im no longer considering clipping the bright cap. With the 70/80, I wasn't able to turn the treble above 1/4 of the way up.
I would recommend to anyone who buys a DSL40c to invest in a better after-market speaker, you wont regret it.

Great to hear about the swap..........Yea, I think Marshall cut some corners with their speaker choice...not necessarily a bad thing to keep the cost down. But you are right, DSL40 owners can instantly better their amp with a speaker swap...... mine digs deeper as well.

Thanks,

Tom
