i have played with a SL5

Postby crunch_sound » 14 Aug 2016, 11:02

hi
i have played with a SL5
i have it
and my conclusion is:

no, it's not a bedroom amp

the clean channel : is not blues, funky
no, not very good
warm ? no
funky ? no
bluesy? no

and the dirty channel ? you like Gary Moore ? yeah it can works
it's a rock sound, the gain is here : lot of gain but not metal

what i do not like : the volume must be on 3 or 4 or more = be careful to your ears
and you must live in a desert island to play so loud ! with good harmonics and feedback
so
it's impossible to play in a bedroom except if you are alone in the tower :)
if you want a good sound IT WILL NEVER work WITH 1w : NO AND NO !
so, 5w is the only way to play with this amp
and a loud sound = volume on 3 or 4
if not, don't buy this amp even if you can play at low volume : it won't sound and NEVER WITH 1w

but you can like the 12" speaker (celestion vintage 30) with a pedal
with one tube for example
and ok it will works but it was not made for that

i won't say that the sound is good to play some ACDC too
it is soft to my ears so, when i listen to Angus in 1979 i prefer his tone

but you can play some rock, hard rock, heavy metal? (not really)
and blues? NO, go to Laney, Fender for that except if you want a lot of gain: it can be like Gary Moore did ( a little bit) yes but loud at home is not the perfect solution

I like mine. I liked it enough that I bought a second one. One for my guitar room and one for my living room so I wouldn't have to carry it back and forth.
A side note, one does sound better that the other. The one that doesn't sound as good (but still sounds pretty good) I had replaced the tubes so maybe I need to check what is in the other and swap out the first one to the same tubes.
but regardless, if it is not your thing then I 'm sure somebody will be happy to buy it from you.
Life is to short not to be happy so get something that you do like :)

I also have this amp and I quite like it. It is the best low wattage Marshall I have found. Like both the clean and overdriven channel.
Funny though I seem to prefer playing my Les Paul with it on the clean channel. The overdrive still is good but I must be ageing as I am not so up on distortion these days. :whoo
