Surprisingly small amount of 2061x owners indeed...
For me it has parked the rest of my amps with the exception of the Kemper which I use for practice at home at more reasonable levels.

Not to say that it is the best Marshall out there when it comes to sound, but it hold its own against the best and is a practical size, both in terms of physical size and power...

This weekend I'll replace the speakers in my 2061CX with greenbacks though... I found that it sound better with greenies and I can push the amp into more natural overdrive with those...

I have a pair of NOS Mullard EL84's and a pair of NOS Telefunken 12AX7's which make a world of difference in this amp. I don't know if you're aware of this or not but Jeff Beck supposedly has an original Marshall 20 Watt Lead & Bass head that he loves so much that he took the reissue head/cab version on the road with him. According to Jeff's guitar and amp tech he runs his flat out and it's just enough power.

I love the tonal fingerprints of old vintage Celestion 25 watt greenbacks, Fane Purple Back 12's, and the old Goodman 12's. However, my tastes have changed such that I really don't prefer clipping from my speakers. As much as many seem to dislike the Celestion G12T-75's, I've found a great use for them when used with higher output amps like my 74' JMP Super Lead.

I truly get the Gary Moore tonal response and this is why: http://www.marshallamps.de/scene/interv ... ymmain.htm (2nd equipment piece from bottom).

On the flip side if I'm doing more crunchy stuff, then maybe I'll go with lower efficiency speakers like the greenbacks. Of course it still depends upon the type of music being played and what works best for the situation/song. I have taken note that guys like Malmsteen, Bonamassa, and Moore all use, and have used Celestion G12T-75's and EVM's because apparently they prefer to get their clipping from the preamp/output sections w/less coloration from their speakers. If you want to reduce headroom use greenbacks unless you have several cabinets loaded with them which will offset the clipping issue whilst providing greater sound spread. For the Marshall 2061CX cabinet I prefer the Celestion G12H-30 Anniversary 12's that came with the cabinet. As a matter of fact the G12H-30's are a perfect match and sound great when used with my Mouradian JTM45/50 head which is putting out around 38 watts average but can approach the 60 power handling of the (2) G12H-30's when the amp is clipping.

In your case with 2 x 25 watt greenbacks you still have 50 watts of speaker handling capacity which should more than cover your peaks. Have you thought of possibly using 2 x G12M's @ 40 watts of speaker handling capacity (you'd still be in the safe zone).

Just jumper the channels the way I did in my pic (and the way Jamie Humphries of LL does) use a decent Les Paul into a Keeley modded Boss BD-2 driver pedal and you've got instant Gary Moore at levels that won't destroy your ears. FWIW I absolutely LOVE this combination.

I think i'm gonna get me one of these to use at home or maybe at rehearsal but on a 4x12 cab. It sounds awesome! Maybe i'll use my Power Brake on it.

I think it sound better on a 2x12 to be honest... and leave the break off when at rehearsal.
For home use you may benefit from a power brake, but the break really prevents you from cutting through the mix... particularly when using a humbucking guitar.

After a year with the 2061X I'm not sure what to do... I'll keep it for sure, but it is too freakin' loud for our rehearsal location and a power brake just prevent it from cutting through the mix. Right now I'm using a 22W Fender Deluxe Reverb head into the 2061CX cabinet. It is nowhere near the 2061X in loudness so I can crank it without a power attenuator...
I'll bring it back to the rehearsal room together with everything I've got with guitars, amps and pedalboards and experiment one day...

Maybe the 2x12 is the problem. With a 4x12 or maybe another 2x12 you'd be able to project the sound better. But i know some tones just get lost in a band situation. When i had the 2205 i had that problem.

Check out my Papus signature 2061x clips on this forum.
Finest amp Marshall ever made.
Perfect compromise between power, loudness, physical size & cost of operation (i.e. re-tubing)

I've tried 4x12 with both Greenbacks and G12H30... same issue...
I'm thinking that it should not be attenuated at all... but for now I'm using the Fender Deluxe Reverb that really works great and will take some time on my own experimenting... I can't start fiddling too much with guitars, cabs, guitars, pedals and stuff while on rehearsal... and setting tone at home is just rubbish.
Great tone at home = useless in a band...

I'm lazy and I'm at work... so instead of searching up all you've written about this... could I trouble you with what kind of modifications you've done with the 2061X with a small description on how you experience the amp before and after?

Is it possible to change to different tubes on this amp btw? Using a professional tech included if necessary...
Which is recommended?
Are there anyone that drops the volume significantly?
EL34, KT66, KT88, other???

Same if you really want to test an amp. Play it at a band rehearsal.
