2061cx Q

Postby TM1 » 21 May 2016, 12:18

Hi! I have a 2061cx cab I bought about 10 years ago. I did install the EC Collins Bluesbreaker-Pinstripe Grill (major tonal improvement btw!) and I installed a wiring harness from Evidence Audio a few years back. It alone was like taking a blanket off my cab.
My question is, has anyone swapped out the speakers for Alnico Celestion Blues? These 30 watt Heritage sound pretty nice even though they're ceramic magnets. The G12-H30 is far and away a better sounding speaker than the G-12M-20. But thinking about taking one of the 30's out and putting an alnico Blue. My ears are so use to hearing the alnico celestions as I have them in everything including a `61 brown Fender Deluxe, a Traynor YGM-3 Guitar Mate and even my 1961 Gibson GA-20 Crest.
Just wondering if anyone has swapped these out?
Thanks!

I have some experience with both speakers but not that specific cabinet. Not a big fan of mixing speakers, I find it better to match them and get the entire new sound.

To me Alnico speakers break up sooner and are smoother and warmer sounding than Ceramic speakers. Is it worth all the extra money, not really. BUT if you don;t mind buying the best for your rig then yes.

I like the Blues but since you like the G12H-30s you should take a look at the Alnico Creambacks.

I had 2 of those cabs. A custom shop model made to my specs and a salt and pepper standard. Both came with the anniversary G12H speakers which I replaced with pre Rola G12m greenbacks and G12H heritage. I wasn't mad on the anniversary models but that's personal taste. I would also pick G12m's over the H's any day too but again personal preference. I currently have a Tayden 25w alnico which is British and modelled on the blue.
I don't see any problems here. A H and a blue should match great! Both giving the extra the other hasn't. Personally I would go 55hz H model and a blue as the H would have a tighter bass with the alnico providing the mids that the H 55hz doesn't have! Just my opinion.

I have a couple of spare Blues I got back in the `90's that I had in a spare Vox AC-30 that had a 1960 AC-30 W black panel. Was the 290th AC-30 made. I sold the chassis to my friend Jim Elyea ages ago as he had the correct "Shadow's AC-30 cab that it would have originally been in. So I just have the old red Rexiene covered cab and it had the blues from about 1996 in it. I'm going to drop them in my 2061cx. The AC-30 "W" had been in the U.K. until 1998. It had white, round knobs that were stock. Dirk Ziff now has it in his collection..

Yeah, I agree! I have a "Poly Grey" alnico T1088 in an old 1961 tweed Gibson GA-20 "Crest" that I'm going to pull and put as the top speaker in this cabinet and use a Blue in the bottom.

Well, been meaning to reply here for a bit.. I did drop-in an Alnico Celestion into the top spot on this cab! Wow, such a nice improvement in sound/tone. I kept one of the 30 watters in the bottom. Cab sounds great with the combination of the two!
