Bass NAD.

Postby Anitoli » 06 Aug 2016, 13:10

Did a little shopping around and scored a Fender BXR 200 bass head and a beat up Ibanez cab for $325. The cab is going to get new speakers, the ones in it are shit, they get this weird crackling noise on the D note and just don't have the tone of my 1960 cab.
The amp is in pretty good shape and everything works. It is very loud. It has allot of tonal options on it and it sounds really good. I think i might need to run a compressor in front to smooth out some of the spiky tones are really easy to get with a bass guitar. I will try my Peavey CEL 2 and report back.

Cool. Ya gotta love bass.
Is that your Rickenbacker?
I love the tone of those bass guitars.
And yeah, I always use a compressor with bass.

Hi Al, yes that is my 1977 4001 which needs to hit the bench because a short while ago the bridge pup stopped producing any out put and i need to figure out why.

I set up that rack compressor in front of the amp and after playing around with it i arrived at some settings that seem to work well without totally killing the basses tone. Now this head being Solid State there is a noticeable amount of SS hiss when you turn it up so i am going to experiment with the noise gate functions on the second channel of the compressor through the bass heads FX loop and see if this is usable. I'll post what i find.

Ok, i FINALLY was able to free up some time and get back to this bass project. The cabinet had these "Power Jam" cones in it made by Ibanez and they were scratchy like the voice coils were shot so i set about replacing them. I didn't go the expensive route. I bought these speakers that i used on my home stereo rig when i blew out the 12" woofers and they seemed to handle the bass of and 85 watt per channel amp very well.

The Fender being SS i didn't really care if they were 8 ohms and not 16, the cab just ends up being 8 ohm total. Surprisingly, they sound pretty good. They handle everything the BXR 200 can shell out and the freq response is usable. They could have a little more on the upper mids to high freqs but a little eq adjust took care of that.

All in all for less than $100 i have a usable bass cab that sounds pretty damn good with the Ric.
