VM used in Back in Black Cover

Postby C0ldFart » 29 May 2009, 14:41

Hi there.
This is a test we did with the VM 2466 recording.

http://www.nobrain.no/facebook/bib.mp3

The VM is recorded on 100%Left and 100%Right
Solo is in center

Cabs where cheap MG412 ab and sm57 midway to cone

The goal with guitars was to sound like the Norwegian band "Kids"

i HAVE now the 425A speaker cab and guess what

in a recording enviroment the MG412 is not as bad, so I'm not selling out on this one...

In a live happening, 425 rocks solid

Nice playing on that, you don't know how many time I hear players screw up that little riff in this song, you nailed it. The tone is very good.

I might buy a VM with a 425A cab but I allready have a 1960BV cab.
How do you like that 425A cab?

Do you think my 1960BV cab is gonna be better than the 425A?
I'm looking to achieve a heavy punk rock tone.
thanks

IMO the 425 is much better suited for classic rock styles. You will miss the tightness of the low end. The cab you already have should be perfect. Vintage 30s are much better for your style than Greenbacks.
If you want the cab to match the head (assuming you're getting a purple one) you could always buy the 425 & sell the speakers. The G12c speakers are hard to come by and you'd probably get enough for them to get your V30s. I recommend Hellatone 60s since they are V30s that are already broken in.

Yeah the rig I wanna buy is all purple, it looks cool but I won't cry if I don't have a matching purple cab.

So if I understand what you said, my 1960BV will have more of a modern "fat and in your face" tone while the 425A will sound more "hendrix"?

That is my opinion yes.
Even though I play blues/classic/southern rock now, I come from a punk/thrash background and did not care for the 425 at all. Most people here do like it though. It's all a matter of preference, I do think that for the sound your going for the V30s are a better choice.

Incredible tone guys! I really enjoyed this track.... that VM has a better tone than the JMP's AC/DC used in my opinion, its not as shrill.

Anyway,

what kind of guitars and pickups were used? and how about some settings, as dialing in tones on the VM is a little bit tricky.

All guitar tracks was recorded with a ESP Horizon NT-II with bridge pickup (Seymour Duncan JB)

eq is slightly boosted at 2K and 4K in post production

I don't remember the amp settings anymore, because they are NOT that important. Most of the tone comes from body, detail and master volume.
Body and detail are about noon and master about 75%
The rest of the settings are about noon as well.

And the shrill is gone by moving the mike away from speaker center.

These cabs are crystal clear, so I was suprised when listening to the miked recording through studio monitors.

Here is a clip of the raw guitar tracks: http://www.nobrain.no/facebook/vm_bib.mp3

It's two mono tracks panned all right and all to the left, so if you try using balance all left or right on your playback you will get my core VM sound

The post eq brings the guitars a bit more into their space in the mix, and the bass and bassdrum overlays fattens up the guitars
