Test clip.

Postby slowpokerhino » 08 Mar 2009, 11:18

I'm just going to throw this up. It's a song called "El Camino". No fancy recording here, just 4 guys in a room with a bunch of mics, a mixer & a recorder. It was my first attempt at recording a full band live. Never recorded drums before or even used the mixer (it was in my closet for over a year). I was so worried about getting a good mix of everybody else that I kind of buried myself! I've thought about going back and overdubbing my parts with my acoustic since that is the way I originally wrote it. Here I'm using my LP and VM. As it stands there are no overdubs or studio tricks. It is what it is.

I got a solid Atlant Rythem Section vibe from that, pretty cool. As far as the recording you can get by on stuff recorded like but you will need to use a good compressor on the entire mix so it is not so boomy.

Thanks guys, appreciate the compliments.
I agree, a good compressor would make a world of difference, especially on the drums.
This was my first attempt, next one will be better.

ARS.....really? :doh

Thanks Dean. I wish I could take credit for the lead, I do play some lead but on this song it's our other guitarist Greg.

i like how it swells for the chorus n stuff....feels like there is a good dynamic goin on in the group. the solo around 1.45 is pretty cool. suits the mood of the song!! ders a few dire straights-ish bits in the lead!! 2.08, 2.19! (prob not intended but what it reminded me of, which i like)

As far as buryin yerself in the mix....its not too bad, yer guitar doesnt stand out as much as the lead but fills the sound nicely. i think any louder n it wud prob overpower the lead slightly and the mix wudn be as clear. id like ta hear how it wud sound comin out of a studio!! :dance

Greg was using his 1979 Strat through either a 1966 Fender Bassman or mid-seventies Marshall 50 watt JMP head (can't remember which, he switches back and forth quite a bit) through a homemade 2x12 loaded with Celestion G12-80 (rola era) speakers. The only effect he uses is a Boss digital delay.
