My short Yngwie clip...

Postby jannne » 21 May 2009, 08:30

My friend and I finally had the chance to do some serious tone testing last Saturday and try different speaker etc combinations with our VMs. Here's a short clip I recorded last night with my favorite setup. Of course, the audio doesn't do any justice to the real tone but I'll buy a beer to anyone who can guess what equipment was used :Cheers

Actually the basic sound chain is in my signature, but there's a lot more hidden underneath.... Something you wouldn't expect... :whatever

Ok, here goes even with the risk of being banned from the forum because of heresy :love :

Fender Strat w/ DiMarzio HS-3 & YJM pickups (very low output)
cheap t.bone wireless
DOD YJM308 overdrive pedal, modded to exact 70's gray DOD250 specs, full gain and volume
VM2266, preamp modded to early 70's metalpanel specs, bias circuit and power amp modded to accept also EL34s, JJECC83S and E34L tubes, low dynamic range, detail on full, body about halfway, master on full
Boss Giga Delay in the loop, 450 ms delay time, ~2 repeats
two 4x12 cabinets w/ Vintage30s
amp output impedance set at 7,6 ohms, total load impedance 4 ohms

We compared a stock 2466 against my 2266, the stock 2466 preamp going into the 2266 power amp w/ E34Ls, modded 2266 preamp into the stock 2466 power amp w/ KT66s, a VM cabinet, V30 cabinets, matching and mismatching the load impedance etc etc etc.... And to our ears the above setup sounded the best :yea

Good job, but to be fair if youre gonna do Yngwie you need a lot more gain. I bet that setup sounds bitchin in high range with the detail lowered a bit.
Fender Strat (Bare Knuckle Custom '62 pickups), Gibson Les Paul Standard T 2016, Ibanez PGM301, Dean ML, Dean Razorback,
Marshall 2266c
Marshall 2266 half stack
Fender Hot Rod Deluxe I

Depends if you're after Yngwie's old or current tone.... Nowadays he's using G12T-75 speakers and the YJM308 which is more trebly than the old DOD250 pedal. Also there's some high frequency roll off on the video making the amp sound a bit cleaner than it actually was. I've been thinking of recording some clips with a properly miked cabinet to capture the tone better.

I think it's quite interesting that both the 425A cab and the V30s sounded much better with a mismatched load. I don't really care if I risk blowing the OT - that's why they sell spares :)
