I remember when Batio hit the scene, here in LA. Many scoffed him as a gimmick w/ no substance. I'll tell you what, he plays left handed, right handed, both at the same time & both at the same time upside down. & he's a mighty fine player at any of the above.
He was serious as all hell, when he 1st came out. Since then, he doesn't seem to take himself so serious, but he's really a true talent.
An inside look at that night:
The show was booked as:
Extreme Cream
A once in a lifetime event!
- THE PLAYERS -
Uli Jon Roth Derek St. Holmes Don Dokken Michael Angelo Batio
Craig Goldy Kofi Baker Roy Z Mark Boals Vinny Appice
Elliott Dean Rubinson Howie Simon Warren Dunlevy Jr.
First Time EVER Lineups Performing...
Cream Dio Jimi Hendrix Black Sabbath Ted Nugent
MSG Deep Purple Blind Faith Rainbow and MUCH more!
The show only sold maybe 75 tickets, so it was basically a party w/ everyone. I was sitting drinking beers w/ many of the people on the list & then some. Made connections & shared info. Was told by some to contact them & they'd get me all access to any shows.
I didn't talk to Batio, but the other guys did. He seems like a cool dude though. I didn't take my camera to the show. Some clubs are nazi-like when it comes to cameras & since we took the concierge transpo, I wouldn't have had a plan B if they denied access w/ my camera gear.
