100 JH VS 1959 Handwired

Postby idune » 28 Feb 2012, 21:01

I had a chance to try both amps but just for few minutes, then to invest on 100JH of course it's a holy grail of the amp i believe but on the 1959 HW is also great amp with less money to invest.

I'm thinking about to get one of them but couldn't decide, has anyone experienced these amp?

Well it all depends on whether you want to get the early Hendrix Are You Experienced sounds or the later Woodstock, Royal Albert Hall type tones. The 100jh has a much more powerful transformer and the KT66 tubes have a very rich and fat tone like the Vintage Modern. However, the 1959 will sound more like Woodstock with a fuzz. The transformers are weaker and it runs on El34 power tubes. Both sound amazing for what they do. You really cant make a wrong choice between the two.

If you want to invest less, then get a Vintage Modern where you get the best of both worlds andthen some. You get the heavy duty ay down transformer of the 100jh with the better power filtering of the 1959 plus an extra preamp gain tube option or go back to vintage specs (kind of). The VM is seriously one badass amp that almost precisely gives you the best of both worlds that you describe. If you already own a Vm then get the 100jh if you want to run them in stereo. If you want 2 different sounds and own the VM, get the 1959 hand wired.

Thanks for your comment,

In my opinion 100jh is more of mid and warmer kind of sound (with the fairly low volume) and 1959HW i felt it more like a fender amp spark in their DNA which i really like too. But the thing is to buy 100jh, i have to buy the whole set 1 head and 2 cabinet(greens 4x12) for around $4,700. For the 1959, i just take the head home for $2,000. What do you think? and i need more time to save up for the 100jh :think

But if i get 1959HW i have only cabinet with 2x12 V30 to go with what is your recon? may be i have to get greenback later on anyway.

When you mention about 100JH is more like a Vintage modern is very interesting cause it would suit my application. Or may be i get 100JH and sell one cabinet so i don't end up invest too much money by having a wall of the amp but can't run it to their ability :soccer

Thanks again for you comments

I havent tried VM yet, on the day i went to the shop i tried out YJM, 1959 SLP, 1959HW and 100JH. The result with 59HW and 100JH is superb the dynamic of the HW amp is very sensitive. On YJM i think i couldn't find the clean sound of this amp at all and not articulate at all. Also on the 1959SLP to compare with the 59HW, on the 59HW is more Hi-Fi sound to it. That's just my opinion so i narrow down my choice to these two amp.

Ah! Man you definitely need to try a Vintage Modern. I put my 2466 up against my Jtm 45/100 which is the same as the 100JH only ine has original 1966 parts in it. Dont even think aout the compaisons between every amp you just mentioned. Get yourself a Vintage Modern and call it a day. Its what Robin Trower, Slash and a huge list of pro players use and allows you to control the tone in your guitar's volume control from crystal clean to raging fire with a twist of the knob.

A Vintage Modern will beat the shit out of a YJM any day of the week or any 59 Plexi for tha matter due to the much more powerful transformer and more robust power tubes.

Best you can do is try them out if possible. The VM is it´s own amp and got it´s own unique sound. So if you want the HW or the JH tone get one of these. Look at the Marshall factory tour clip on YouTube where he tells the components on the Vintage Series 1959 and the HW are the same. The ones on the HW is only made to look old. According to him they both sound the same. Guess if you try both out you will hear a difference. But if you compare two amps of the same model they will differ too. The JH is different though.

I've never owned a 1959 but I do have a 1976 JMP 100 which runs EL34s and it was actually Robin Trower's main #1 stage amp for many years that he ran in stereo with a JCM 800. While it has this super fat and rich tone, it can not be run in stereo very well with the VM 2466 because the VM hits the ears differently and drowns the JMP out.

When I run the JMP, it goes well with a Blackstar HT40 Club combo for the dirt or a Bugera 1960 Plexi clone (though I'd love to have a JCM 800 to run with it) and the JMP leads. I could immediately see why Robin, when he fell for the Vintage Moderns why he didnt keep the JMP as EL34s don't balance out well with KT66s.

I remember SteveD saying a while back when I questioned how loud the VM was. He said to be careful because the sound hits the ears differently. I couldn't agree more. However, if you tape the sound, the VM has a much fuller, fatter tone that cuts through the mix with more authority.
