Re: How to test ohm rating for a speaker?

When it's connected to the amp, the amp's transformer is still in parallel with the speaker and has an impedance of around 1 ohm or less. It might also make the meter produce randomly changing readings because it's highly inductive and can mess up the meter's auto-sensing - even speakers can do this...

Re: KT-66s in my Twin?

The stock C-series ceramic Jensens do have a shrillness I don't really like either - the P series are Alnicos, and sound sweeter. They're also noticeably quieter - I put a new P12R in a 70s Deluxe Reverb once and thought the amp wasn't working right, it was so quiet. The amp measured right on the co...

Re: KT-66s in my Twin?

Simply removing the tremolo valve won't do much - it's just the oscillator and is not connected to the signal path at all. The reason removing the tremolo *circuit* does is because the Intensity pot is still a parallel load on the signal path even when it's at zero, and absorbs some tone and volume....

Re: CLASS 5 BAD RATTLES

A 5W amp through the right 200W 15" speaker will sound amazing! There's no such thing as needing "enough" power to drive a speaker - any speaker will operate perfectly at any input below its rated power... if you think about it, when you turn down a powerful amp to a low setting, it's producing a ti...

Re: Low Volume playing - attenuation

Some important questions: 1 - Are you using it between the amp and the speaker, or in the effects loop? 2 - If between the amp and speaker, does it get hot? (Or at least warm, if the amp isn't turned up very far.) 3 - If it gets hot, does it get *very* hot? If between the amp and speaker and it *doe...

Re: KT-66s in my Twin?

KT66s draw slightly more filament current than 6L6s, so it will put a little more load on the power transformer. Given how sturdy old Fenders are it's probably not a concern, but it might be an idea to check the power transformer for overheating after the amp has been on an hour or so - they can get...

Re: Combo just not loud enough :(

The 1960s are a lot better than the 1936s, even with 75s - you can really hear the difference the ply makes, and they're significantly more resonant and punchy. The V30-loaded 1960Vs are in a different league though, they're seriously powerful-sounding cabs. The 425 is going to be great too, since i...

Re: Combo just not loud enough :(

I hope this doesn't offend anyone, but I think the modern 1936 is an extremely poor cabinet. The G12T-75s are not my favourite speakers anyway (they sound quite good for scooped modern rock sounds, but not much else - they're quite hollow-sounding and not that loud), but that cabinet really doesn't ...

Re: CLASS 5 BAD RATTLES

"My newer Class 5 has a great deal of headroom over the first 2" Now *that* is interesting. Maybe the one I tried was unusually low-headroom, and not particularly good sounding? It sounded like it was 'working OK', but it would be hard to tell for sure, with a sample of one and having never heard on...

Re: CLASS 5 BAD RATTLES

If you're comparing it to another similar-sized, single-EL84 4W amp with a 10" speaker, it might seem fairly loud... but it is *not* "very loud" for a 5W amp. Go and compare it to a top-quality 5W amp with a 100dB 12" speaker and you will see what I mean. Of course, through an efficient extension ca...

Re: CLASS 5 BAD RATTLES

Certainly, but I thought it was better to try to explain *why* I didn't like the amp, rather than to simply say "I don't like it", which is pretty pointless. The reason I posted it on this particular thread is because I got the impression from hearing it that the way it sounds and the fact that a la...

Re: CLASS 5 BAD RATTLES

Yes, fairly small. This is a large magnet: http://professional.celestion.com/guitar/products/classic/detail.asp?ID=31 And yes, I know it's not the same speaker as a G10 Greenback and is probably too dark for this amp (it is very dark, for a 10"). But it does have a nice full tone with a lot of natur...

Re: 425B and two heads question

*NEVER* connect two amp heads to the same speakers at the same time, even if one is switched *off*, let alone on standby. The output transformer of the amp which is off will act as a low-impedance load on the amp which is on and may damage it, and the voltage produced by the 'on' amp will also be st...

Re: CLASS 5 BAD RATTLES

The one I tried didn't, although I only played it for about half an hour. SteveD - yes, I looked in the back, or I wouldn't have said so. I saw a fairly cheap-looking speaker with a fairly small magnet. I really wanted to like this amp, but I just found it very disappointing. I still miss my Studio ...

Re: Combo just not loud enough :(

Yes, but you won't get much useful reduction - the range of variation of normal 12" guitar speakers is quite small, from about 94dB to about 100dB. The G12Ms are right in the middle at 97dB (or 96, or 98 depending on which figures are being used... I've seen all three quoted for G12M-25s at various ...
