Re: 100 watt VM on 40 watt cab.....

I *could* be wrong, but I'm almost certain that the two speakers in a TSL100 combo are a "Vintage" (which is a V30) and a "Heritage", which is an M-magnet speaker I think based on or identical to the old G12M-70. This makes them both rated at a minimum of 120W even if the V30 is a 60W speaker. You c...

Re: 100 watt VM on 40 watt cab.....

Frank - a V30 (60W) and a G12H-30 (30W) is *not* enough for a 77W amp - it's only a 60W pair. (Not 90W, if you thought that!) The power is divided equally between the two speakers so you can't put more than 60W through the pair before the H30 gets 30W. So you're actually wasting the higher rating of...

Re: Yes Another KT66 Question...

Yes, you definitely can, and it does improve reliability. Fender's use of them at those voltages in the 'Ultra Linear' configuration helps too, since the screen voltage tracks the plate voltage as it drops with signal - whereas in the more common fixed-voltage screen arrangement, unless it's set del...

Re: 100 watt VM on 40 watt cab.....

I haven't heard any Scumbacks, but I have heard some of those Eminences which claim to 'clone' some classic Celestions, and my experience is that they sound like Eminences. It's hard to put a finger on exactly why, but I haven't liked any of them, just as I don't like any other Eminences really (for...

Re: Yes Another KT66 Question...

It's not to do with the amp as such - it's because the KT66s are already at the extreme upper end of their safe operating voltage (about 500V) in the 2466. Pulling two makes the plate voltage rise - not much, but *any* increase is potentially risky here, which is why SteveD can't recommend it as bei...

Re: Yes Another KT66 Question...

No, not at all. EL34s are further the other way from KT66s - more midrange complexity and crunch, less low end and less glassy highs even though they are bright.

Re: Which power tubes are least microphonic?

JJs seem to be a bit less microphonic-prone, but like DeanM said, most power valves are so to at least a small extent, you just don't notice because they're the last gain stage so it doesn't get further amplified like it does with preamp valves. (Which is why V1 is the most prone to it in any amp.) ...

Re: Yes Another KT66 Question...

No, set the amp to *half* the impedance of the cab - 4 ohms for an 8-ohm cab - with only two valves in. 6L6s should sound cleaner and glassier than KT66s, maybe with a bit more bottom-end depth and a slightly harsher top end, depending on exactly which ones. JJs are quite dark and 'solid' sounding, ...

Re: speakers for 2x12 for 2466

The 65s sound very similar to the 25s in voicing, but still aren't the same in response. The bottom end is tighter, the top end more focused, and they don't have that same 'out of control' cone breakup when they're pushed really hard. They also have a wide dust cap so they aren't quite as directiona...

Re: Is it okay to use a Variac with my 2266 Head?

The Trem-o-verb is a Dual Rectifier (original 2-channel model) with reverb and tremolo - available as a head, and a 2x12" combo, which mine is. If that gives you a mental picture of Linkin Park playing Ventures songs, it's not as simple as that! :-) It was discontinued at the same time as the 2-chan...

Re: Yes Another KT66 Question...

Yes, it will work. I would be inclined to do a test run and check the bias current (without adjusting it from your KT66 setting) - but the bias voltage requirements are very similar and it will almost certainly be roughly in the right range, close enough to get you through a gig anyway. I would not ...

Re: Is it okay to use a Variac with my 2266 Head?

That is *very* surprising. The Bold/Spongy and Tube/Diode switches make a huge difference to my Trem-o-verb, even at very low volume. Obviously there isn't any difference in the sag as such until it's cranked up - since that needs a fairly large current draw from the power stage - but the volume, to...

Re: Greetings and Random Questions

Don't get a new amp from them, insist on a full refund including your shipping costs - this is within your rights as a consumer if the goods sold are not as described. You don't actually have to ship it back to them yourself, you can make them do it as long as you do make it available for collection...

Re: Greetings and Random Questions

Two words: Trading Standards You don't have to actually do it, just tell the shop that you know - from Marshall - that they've sold a used amp as new, that you will be taking the case to Trading Standards unless you get a full refund, period. (Including whatever it will cost you to ship the amp back...

Re: Is it okay to use a Variac with my 2266 Head?

Probably because he had already modified the amp with a crude (and extremely dangerous, not just to the amp) attenuator load on the OT primary, according to some sources... so it blew valves constantly. But a Variac *can* be used to change the tone (and does), if you know what you're doing and you'r...
