most probably valves, but could also be the jack sockets need a clean, they can oxidise over time which causes crackles pops and static noise. buy some electrical socket cleaner like servisol super 10, spray a small amount, (and i mean small - dont be trigger happy!), into all sockets and repeatedly...

Most audio cards have separete MIC Input and Line Input. There is a switch which selects wished input. I recommend to use Line Input for this purpose.
