2266 head cutting out on highs

Postby Braudy » 22 Aug 2009, 05:59

Hey fellas I had a gig last night and my amp cut out a few times during my solos when I went high. Are my tubes going or is there another problem?

check you havent got your action too low on your guitar.
had this happen a few times, when you bend on certain high notes with the action too low, it just mutes the note at the top.

Welcome to the forum Braudy. :Thumbs

If the guitar is OK you could try swapping out preamp valves, you may have a faulty one in there.

Thanks for the answers. I think the action's ok cause she plays fine on my other amps. Will I need to bias the pre amp tubes Steve? I keep a set of tubes so I think i'm gonna re tube it anyways. Ive been experementing( It sounds really sweet) playing thru my Roland JC 120's high and out its low then into the Vintage Modern. Could this have damaged the 2266? Thanks for all the help. I've been a long time lurker and love this site and the great info you can get.

Preamp tubes do not need to bias, so change them around as much as you like.

I presume you mean you've been plugging the guitar into the JC's high input and then taking a feed from its low input to the input of the 2266 in which case there should be no problem or chance of damage.

I changed the power tubes and pre amp tubes, and now the amp's presence control does'nt work, and she does'nt seem quite as loud. Any ideas?

what was the master volume? the presence control only has an effect on higher MV settings. it will usually start to become more effective say bout 3 or 4 on the MV. at lower MV it has very little effect.
Everybody seems to think i'm lazy.

It was on 6 thru my 1960!! She's lost volume and sustain as well. The overall gain hasn't been effected but it's lost it's "balls" for lack of a better word. By the way, I only changed the two uncovered pre amp tubes.

Sounds like a bad power amp tube to me. Did you bias the amp when changing them?

Yeah, I biased the power tubes. I guess I need to change the other preamp tubes as well. Can anyone recommend the best preamp tubes?

Are you sure all of the new valves you have installed are OK?

I put in 4 new preamp valves in (JJ's) and it seems to have solved the problem. One of the covered valves had been replaced before so I'll keep a close eye on her and may gig with my 6100 for a while. Anyways thanks for all the help guys.
