Good Jimmy Page Tone

Postby muttiplay » 14 Jul 2009, 01:18

Recently i decided to keep playing till i found a good zeppelinian tone, and i think i got a similar one

Rev: 0
Presence: Max
MV: I got it at about 3,5
Bass: 0
Mid: 6
Trebble: Max
High Dynamic
Mid Boos: off
Detail: 7
Body: 5,25

I'm using a Gibson LP Standard
I think the trick is to use the volume pot at about 5/6 for Rythm parts. Jimmy already had the guitar at a very high volume, so he didn't need a big volume change for solo parts
You can recognize Jimmy's sound when playing sloppy parts
Play till your fingers bleed

I posted this in another thread but thought I should probably put it here:

This is THE tone I've been trying to dial in for 2+ years now (I knew it was in there, just couldn't find it).

Obviously, not everyone's (or anyone's?) setup will be the same as mine, but give it a shot:

Reverb: about 3. Sometimes on, mostly off.
Master: 6-7ish.
Presence: 4.5
Bass: 0-1
Mid: 3-4
Treble: 9-10
Mid boost: on
Dynamic Range: low
Detail: 10
Body: 9

Head: 2466 (JJ tubes in v1&v2, Tung Sol's in v3 & v4, Gold Lion KT-66s)
Cab: 1936 2x12 (w/ Celestion Classic Lead 80 speakers)
Guitar: 2008 Gibson Custom Shop 1960 VOS Les Paul w/ 57 Classic pickups.
Pedals: NONE.
Chord: Bullet white coily cable.

I love almost any combination of my VM2266 head that...I'm running crazy because I want to buy a couple heads more!!! Really!!!
Now I've almost all setting's at 5 (12 o'clock), no reverb or just a little, varying Detail from 5 to 10 in combination with my beloved Original Marshall The Guv'Nor and Boss SD-1.
High Dynamic Range and Mid-Boost engaged. I can play anything by just controlling everything from the guitar's Volume and Tone knobs
Feel is the key, also! 95%

I want more 2266 heads!!!!

These settings were working for me today for blues leads. They allowed for a very textural, touch sensitive response, every nuance was amplified; fingertips only no pick.

2266 Head 425A :
HDR
Mid-boost off
Body: 2-3
Detail: 1
Treble: 2
Middle: 10
Bass: 6
Presence: 4
Master: 7
(Settings on the dial number, not clock position)

Guitar: Strat w/ Fat 50s neck pup, Volume on 10, Tone at 4-5, Birdseye maple neck, alder body
Pedal: Deja Vibe: Speed about 9:00 o'clock, volume cranked, Vintage setting, Chorus setting, Intensity about 11:00 o'clock.
Joe, Jimi, Stevie, Derek, Carlos, Jimmy, Warren, Buddy, Dickie, Eric, Lonnie, Robin, Duane, Luther, David, Tommy, Walter

This is with the Marshall Vintage Modern 2466 run through an Avatar Cabinet with Hellatone 60 (Vintage 30) speakers. I play a Music Man Axis Super Sport rosewood guitar.

Reverb: 1
Master Volume: 4.5 - 5
Presence: 6
Bass: 3
Mid: 5.25
Treble: 6.5
Dynamic Range: High (Roll down volume knob for a very nice responsive clean)
Mid Boost: Off
Detail: 7
Body: 5.75ish

These settings make for a nice Plexi style tone with a good bit of bottom end.

Hey i love this little amp and the posts are very helpfull to. As far as the favourite settings sticky goes could we not split this further into guitar types...Eg LP, Strat, Tele etc... this would make it so much easier to navigate through and also stop potential page overload problems later on when we get to 20 + pages of data !! hehe regards Rob

Robin Trower's VM settings are as follows from the pic below and what he told me last Saturday at the Penn's Peak gig before I got him to sign my Strat: http://areyouexperienced.net/robintrowe ... 3-2009.htm

Robin's VM settings:

He compensates for the lower detail settings by having his Fulltone RTO signature overdrive pedal set with treble at 3 o'clock and drive at 9 o'clock with volume at noon on the pedal. Then for solos, he kicks on his Fulldrive which is set at 11 o'clock on volume, treble all the way up and drive at about 1. He uses that as his boost for solos to give a little more treble edge and boost but mainly he just has the amp set at the below while the RTO stays on always.

Reverb 0
MV = 8
Presence (1/2) of 1
Bass = 2
Middle = 5 1/2
Treble = just under 4
High Range = On
Mid Boost = I'm thinking off
Detail = 4
Body = 5 On the pic but he said both were on 4

Hey does anyone have a good idea for an EVH tone? I can't seem to find the right combo settings to get that sustain and saturation that he gets...

Gibson SG 61 Reissue - Play original songs along the lines of Foo Fighters and Them Crooked Vultures and play covers of bands like Van Halen, Foo Fighters, Them Crooked Vultures - all the good stuff. Haven't gigged with it yet, but this is at practice volume with the rest of the band.

Reverb - 5
Master - 2/3
Presence - 4
Bass - 4
Middle - 5
Treble - 7
Detal - 5
Body - 7

High Dynamic Range
Mid boost - switch off for the classic stuff sometimes, but I love a good mid boost.

Yesterday on the bridge pickup I turned the tone down to 1 with guitar volume at 10 using the above settings, and our bass player nearly fell over because of the sound. It was like a slight fuzz/tremelo/synth sound that begged for vibrato. Great for some dirty blues jams. Sounded very 60's, so smooth. Wish Clapton was in my house for a demo...I didn't realise my guitar could actually sound the way it did. Love it!
