LDR > HDR : boost problem?

Postby Louis » 12 Dec 2010, 11:38

Hi people im new to this forum so 'ello!

I'm not one for small talk so i'll get straight to the point.

my band play covers of all sorts of varieties : funk, Blues, Rock
I like to have my LDR as a cleaner, funkier setting with a little crunch, so i'm able to use it for Red Hot Chilli Peppers to Rolling stones to James Brown songs.

When I switch from my LDR into HDR though, my HDR comes through a hell of a lot louder.

So I can't use my prefered LDR settings, because the volume difference (between LDR & HDR) is too much! To combat it I have to have my LDR settings cranked up more than I would prefer, so the differences aren't too dissimilar. Perhaps its my EQ settings causing this volume difference, but that wouldn't make sense as they are not 'extreme' in any way

Settings: treb, mid, presence: 1 or 2 o' clock. Bass: full. Detail: 1 o' clock. Body: 2 o'clock. Midboost: ON

I'm going to have a proper fiddle on tuesday at rehearsal but was wondering if anyone else has this problem. Could it be my settings or the amp?

Thanks in advance,

Louis

its not a problem - its the way the VM was designed. its simply not a 2 channel amp. i think of it as a single channel amp that happens to have two distinct voicings (dont know if thats technically the correct way to think about it but thats how i do).

But i've been watching a few videos on youtube and i've seen one guy have the amp on a virtually clean setting for LDR. Then he switches to HDR. Sure, the distortion kicks in and it sounds a lot more meaty and how the HDR should sound. But there doesn't seem to be a large volume increase. I'll give my amp a fiddle around on Tuesday. Maybe it's because on the youtube videos the amp is barely cranked up at all. The louder the amp the more i'll notice it.

Don't get me wrong though.................I freaking love the tones this amp produces

who knows what he might be doing or what youtube might be masking - but there is a large difference in volume between LDR and HDR.

there are many threads that talk about this on here - may even be some creative ways that others have dealt with it (ie to try and get some 2 channel-like functionality out of it)

I'm afraid you can fiddle around with the amp, but that volume difference is not going to disappear. Maybe you can post the link of that Youtube video? This guy must be doing some trick. You could cut the volume in HDR in the effects loop with a Boss LS2 or something similar(boosting is harder), but then you have to hit two switches.

Have you thought about keeping it on HDR and rolling back your guitar volume to get the clean stuff?

I'm in the same situation, and I use a compressor to level up the LDR volume.

Exactly what I was gonna say! Guitar volume pot and the VM live together. The amp responds so damn well to a nice volume pot.

Welcome to the forum Louis. :Thumbs

The Low Dynamic Range is NOT a clean channel!

It is designed to give the equivalent gain of what you have when your guitar volume is on about 3 when in High Dynamic Range. In low Range of course you can utilise the full span of your guitar volume in this 'clean zone'.
Still my guitar gently weeps
