Anyone bias cold

Postby Ghostrider » 17 Aug 2009, 19:34

I had a bit of time this afternoon and thought I would play around with the bias to see if I can get anything better with my Tele, again I love the Les Paul with the 2466 but my Tele not so much. First I cranked the bias up to about 84mVDC and did'nt like that, then I started taking it down and what I noticed is that the mids started coming to life with that guitar, much less "ice picky" with the Fender now.

FInally stopped when I took it down to 68mVDC and thought the amp sounded best there. I think there is a bit of a false percetion that biasing hot equals super tone when if fact to me setting this amp a bit cold worked out the best. What do you guys think.

That's one of those subjective things. Like the people that like V30 speakers over greenbacks. Glad you found your sweet spot!

Well, I have found that I don't much care for the tone of my VM2266 with the master above 7. I wonder if a bit colder biasing or later breakup rated tubes would change that ?

But I sure love it to death right at about 5-5.5, just about right for me.

How does the Les Paul sound with the amp biased cold?

68mV isn't particularly cold and if it works for you then run with it. It certainly won't harm anything.

This is a question for Steve D:

Isn't biasing the VM2266 at -43mA to -48mA fairly hot for an amp that provides 430 to 440 Volts at pin 3 ?

I usually use 25 watts dissipation and 70 % as parameters and I bias using the following formula:

(25 watts/435 Volts) * 70 % = 40 mA

Thanks for your answer.

Didier

Welcome to the forum DIDIER. :Thumbs

Nothing to stop you biasing your amp to 40mA if you wish but we go 80% with the KT66s. Yes it's a little hot but not excessive, they handle it fine.

i biased my 2466 last weekend. i was actually impressed with how well matched the valves were matched after 2yrs. they're 2yr old valves and when i checked the bias it was like 72/74. i thought that since i play mostly below 2 on the MV that maybe if i biased it hot it would help warm the tone up a bit at lower volumes. i biased it to 77.5/80 and it worked. it took some of the high end gain-ness out of it. made it fatter with a little less thin-ness. BUT! i think i prefer it the way it sounded before. i would have the guitar volume up full for solos and heavy rhythm or roll down a boit for more of a crunchy rhythm and then to down further for a warm overdrivven bluesy sound. but with the bias up high it took the high end fizz out and also i use to have to have it atleast a bit above 1 to get a good tone but after biasin hot it sounded good even a lil below one. i think it was a lil louderactually. but also made it much more aggressive. i found that when i rolled down for a bluesy sound it was a bit too aggressive. i think i will bias it nxt time about the same as it was first. maybe try center it a lil higher say around 75mA.
Everybody seems to think i'm lazy.
I dont mind...I think they're crazy!

Thats because you can't leave the controls static from low volume to high volume you have to adjust for high volume play to get the most out of the sound as it gets really fat on the high end. I don't know how you set yours precisely but most people who post settings tend to be really on the bassy side of the scale, so it doesn't suprise me they don't like when its turned up because it just gets fatter. Best thing is to jam with it at high volume and fine tune it and get used to the sound. I thought exactly the same thing till I gave the amp more mids and treble and she lit up with richness.
