Power tubes

Postby tonesdude » 21 Jun 2011, 09:43

My 2266C had a power tube take a dump. Amp tech told me he didn't have any KT66's on had so he recommended 6L6's. Is this ok?

Also, while in the store I saw a good deal on a 1960A cab. Is this a good match?

Thanks.

Yes 6L6's will fit in, but get them biased if need be.

1960A isn't a good match with the VM, but that's up to you decide, tone is subjective. ;)
Guitars: Gibson Les Paul Classic, Gibson Midtown Custom, Fender American Standard Stratocaster, Fender Telecaster.
Amps: Marshall Vintage Modern, Marshall JTM Offset, Vox AC15.
Past Marshalls: 1987x, JVM410H, SL5, JMP1, 1960AX, 1936.

Don't do it! buying the 1960a cab will be like tying one of the VM's arms behind its back. Like Onza said tone is subjective, but the 1960a cab "sounds" to take away 30% of your gain & response. Its the difference between a stale beer & a fresh beer. I would say anything BUT that cab.

It may be a convenient option for your tech, but don't do it lightly, you'll be changing the character of your beautiful amp's sound, and many would suggest not for the better.

Man I would do it.

"YOU"....may like it. Experimentation is a beautiful thing.

Plug the 1960a Cab in. "YOU" may like the sound of that too.

What I may like and what you like to hear could be totally different.

Do your thing.....its the only way to get the answers you want.

Cookie cutter setups are not for me.

Cheers.
