How often do you change your pick?

Postby TonyC » 01 Jul 2008, 06:35

Since I got the VM I'v been playing more and more, this year I've played a minimum of 3 hours and up to 10 hours a day... every day! I just can't stop. I'm really back in that inspired state I was in as a teeneger. It's lovely really :)

Anyway, I currently use the green Dunlop Gator 1.5 mm, the one with an alligator on it. Problem is I wear it out and have to change pick every day since I hate it when the tip gets polished and angled. I like this pick because I get a good grip and it doesn't bend or flex. I also like the tone I get from it.

Can anyone recommend a replacement that doesn't wear out as fast, that has the same stiffness, grip and shape? What about the Dunlop Tortex? The Dunlop Nylons last long but they are simply not stiff enough.

I use a Large Rounded V-Pick - the same one I ordered in March. I took my wife's nail file to it once to file the point back into shape but beyond that they wear very well and I play hard! I just ordered five more out of fear that I would lose my pick because I can't play with the thin ones anymore. Check them out here -> http://www.v-picks.com/

I've checked the V-Pick site before, but they don't have anything that even reminds of the size and shape of a "regular" pick. They are also extremely thick to my eyes. Besides I don't agree with their philosophy that a pick should glide over the strings with no friction. I need it to be a bit raspy.

All I can say is stay away from Fender California Clears, they mark up your guitar like a crayon and wear stupid like they are made out of cheap plastic. I use the Dunlop Celluloid picks, heavy. I have to change them about every 1-2 weeks depending on how much I play.

I use plain old Fender mediums. They don't last too long but are cheap. I used to use the brownish/red ones but I think they changed something about how they make them because all of a sudden I started get these red pick marks on my guitars. Not cool. So now I only play the white ones and have no worries. Besides, my son usually takes them before they get too rounded off!

Yeah, Fender definitely changed their plastic because those Clears I talked about used to not mark my guitars. I can actually feel them melt if I'm playing some really fast stuff. They suck now.

The black Gibsons aren't that great either. It 's like they're made of hard pressed graphite or something. You can almost see a small pile of black powder on the floor after a couple of hours of playing.

Dunlop Tortex Green Sharp. They last awhile. But my pile of picks is huge, so I basically use a different pick everytime I play. hahaha.

I was told the Dunlop Tortex would last longer but they don't get thicker than 1.14 mm right? I tried one and it was really not stiff enough.

I need to find a solution to this... I buy 30 picks every month and the guys at the store are starting to think I'm eating one a day :)

I use the tortex 0.73's and have been for years. Can normally get good deals on bulk buying from ebay etc.

I tend to use a new one every practice or gig...mainly cause i like fresh pics and I also leave my old ones lying about and forget where they are.

I have a stash of Pickboy Jazz 1.5 picks that I use and they can last a while even with heavy picking exercise. They have a nice sharp tip. Lately I've been using the Dunlop 205 Jazztone picks and I'm not sure anyone could ever wear one of those down.

I also love fresh picks. How resistant do you find the Tortex are to wear?

I have to try one of those Jazztones.
