I'm considering getting a Tele-type of guitar... with Humbucker in bridge position and a Single-Coil in neck position.

Would it work installing an S-1 switch that runs the Humbucker and Single-Coil together, or would that just twist things around in an ugly way?

Are you referring to a 3-way switch where the pickup configuration is neck-neck/bridge-bridge?

I thought this was standard switching on a tele with a single and a bucker? I thought s1 switching was on a strat for non standard combos of pups?

Yeah, 3 way switches are standard on Tele's. I dont think it would matter much if the bridge pup was a bucker or a single, it would just sound different.

No, the S-1 switch is not the same as a three way switch... I'm sure you can use a three way, or a five way for sure, to function as an S-1 switch, but that would for sure kill the versatility the S-1 switch is meant to give.

On a Tele, the three way switch gives you the option of running each of the pickups alone or in parallell... The S-1 switch gives you the option of running them in series instead. So you get a fatter tone out of your pickups.

This works great with singlecoils, but what if I've never heard that with combining with humbucker or P90's... or any other combination with those for that matter.

You only get a fatter tone when running two single coils that way as they become a humbucker.. I wouldn't see any real advantage of doing that with a single and HB personally

Exactly true... but running an humbucker and singlecoil that way makes it technically a 1,5 x humbucker (if that makes any sense?)...
Combining an humbucker with P90, or two P90's I would even know how to name :)

I have a Tele guitar with this setup. The neck single coil pickup is a DM Twang King and the bridge humbucker (in SC format) is a DM Chopper T. Basically they are a very low output SC and a mid/hot HB. Instead of the usual tone pot the guitar is fitted with a switch to change between series or parallel when both pickups are activated together.

When in parallel mode position 2 (pickup selector) blends well with position 1 (SC only). It gives the sound more higher frequencies and the signal is a bit hotter.

On the other hand when in series mode position 2 fits well with position 3 (HB only) and provides the sound with more bass freq. or you could say with more "meat" compared to the HB only.

The other combinations are also very usable. When using both pickups for example while playing through an amp set for breakup/crunch you can play cleans when in parallel mode and as soon as you switch to series mode you get crunch sound. What you obviously have also if using the SC or the HB only but it has a different sound as described above.

Thank you for that clarification... however, I placed an order for a "bastard" tele-style guitar with P90's.
I think that is where I want to be... If a Les Paul and a Stratocaster would have an offspring, that it was it would be.
