3210 project

Postby Tim. » 18 Dec 2010, 13:27

hi there, i am Tim. i live in sw washington state...
this would be my first post and thought i would introduce myself and ask for some advice. two birds...right?
i am 5 or 6 months into my first electric guitar, been playing acoustics for about a year longer. i am 40 years in this world.
i play between 1.5 to 6 hours a day. i stink but have a great time with it.

on to the real problems...

i picked up a project marshall lead 100 mosfet.
many of the knobs are scratchy and have dead or dim spots in the rotation.
there is a rattle inside (no problem, i got that)
tolex coming up along the face.

i am primarily concerned with the knobbage scratchy-fadey thing.

soldering and such should not be a problem either. but i am a total newbie when it comes to tracking quality parts and such for repairing amps.

i go into it with much enthusiasm, i only wish i had a tube amp to repair instead.

my other equipmet consists of: gibson les paul studio, line 6 spider IV 15w , marshall class5 in creamy white. plus two taylors: DN3 and a GA-12 a little martin and a 3/4 strat for travel and the wee lass when she feels like playing with her old man.

now that i have :barf ed up all this introductory info, id like to :rocker or :jam with my new old amp without too much :cuss that would be :yea ...

thanks :bgrin

thanks!

well, it is loud as hell and sounds as good as new.

the tolex has a few bumps and bruises but still looks great. turned out nice!

needs a little cleaning on the outside and it will be done.

Hi Guys

The 3210 was prone to reverb driver circuit fires. Yes - it will burn a hole through the PCB!

The reverb drive circuit can be modified to assure stability, as it is self-oscillation that causes the device over-heating and eventual fire. The factory-recommended solution was to strap a 330R resistor across D8+D9 to reduce the voltage between the complimentary BJT bases.

That would preventative maintenance.

The scratchy pot issue usually comes down to using a proper electronic spray-lube. Considering the amp's age, resoldering the PCB will prevent 98% of nuisance problems that are usually caused by cold solder connections.

Have fun
