Have I got a problem? 1960A and 1936 vintage cab

I have a 1936 V cab which I keep for bedroom use with my JCM2000 DSL and Boss ME-80. Recently I bought a 1960A cab to use for gigs which is a JCM900 series. My worry is that the 1960A sounds really quite thin and trebly compared to the 1936 which is almost a bit too bassy. I have to change all my amp settings and fx settings to compensate. Do you guys think there could be a problem with the 1960A cab or is it just a difference between speaker types and cab shapes?

check for loose connections within the cab,also those stereo input plates are notorious for going out.
FIRST-measure the Ohms output @ the jacks.



testing individual speakers-



if that's ok my guess would be the plate has gone South but try some electric contact cleaner & work the jacks a bit before replacing it.

You seem to be telling me how to test ohm of cabs and how to find out if the speakers are working both of which I know.

you said "thin & trebly",to me that sounded like a mechanical problem and that's usually the exact symptom of the jackplate dying.

Thanx I didn't realise this...I thought they either worked or they didn't. I had no idea a failing plate could effect the tone ! And your post wasn't to clear on this. Are you suggesting that I need to check the Ohms to clarify if the plate is failing?

yes. sometimes the sound may become intermittent,have no sound @ all,one input may quit while the other still works,etc.etc.

all of the above can fry the transformer on the head so be sure to test the Ohms(impedence) regularly or just replace it completely.

the Mojotone one is supposedly much more reliable.

First off the 1960A cab has 2 speakers that face up at you which will make it sound thinner than the 1936 is lower and will sound thicker when up close. Now if the speakers in the 1960A are out of phase not all wire to + & - correctly this will make it thin also.
