Mesa Boogie

Postby jamesb » 23 Mar 2009, 14:15

Hiya,

I'm new to this forum, but I was hoping you folks could advise me :)

I'm looking for a tube amp, and I think I've settled on Mesa Boogie - I've heard a few of them and I think they have a great sound. There are a lot of different models though - can anyone recommend something for me to try out? I currently play either a Strat or LP into a VM 2466, which does sound amazing. I'm really looing for something I can get more 'modern' overdriven/distorted sounds out of, to complement the VM. Preferably a head/cab...

Has anyone played any Mesa's? I appreciate any advice you can give.

Also, the obligatory photo of my 2466 and 425 cab. It's definitely my favourite of all the Marshall tube stuff, and then some! :Thumbs

Cheers,
James

I've owned a Studio 22, Mark 4 and a Dual Rectifier in the past - all great amps for different reasons... maybe suss out http://mesaboogieampforum77319.yuku.com/ for some answers.

Save your money and just get a EH metal muff. It will give you a very heavy metal tone with the VM. Check out the sound clip I posted inthe effects forum under " Instant scooped metal"

The Lone Star Special has heavy overdrive, like syrup, is 'dark' sounding, has a great distorted sound but is not modern high gain. So you can probably eliminate this one.

Thanks for your replies.

I actually really like the Lone Star Special, I seem to remember it has really nice, deep sounding reverb. Andy Timmons plays it well on 'Resolution' (IIRC).

I'll give the Rectifiers and Stilettos a play at the store. I think they have the sort of sound I'm after.

Thanks again.

Fantastic reverb with two voices, warm or bright - beautiful cleans as well! Good luck and would like to know what you settle on.

i have a single rectifier that i absolutely love. its only 50 watts but is one hell of a loud amp. it sounds alot like its 100 and 150 watt big brothers, better in my opinion.

I own a studio .22+ and a Dual Rectifier 100w Solo head. I like them both. I'm still looking for a MK III head at a decent price, thats my fave boogie. :ntworth But if you are looking for hi gain, metallica/nickleback kinda stuff, you cant go wrong with a Dual Rectifier. The silicon diode rectification is absolutely face-melting. The all-tube rectifier is great for lower gain/rock and roll stuff. And the fact that you can load it with 6L6's or EL34's and bias with the flick of a switch is awesome. I dig the EL34's myself. I was running mine through an Orange 2x12 just yesterday, and it was great. My Dual Recto is my go-to metal amp. :jam :band

I have a Mesa F-50 which is plenty loud and has a lot of the dual rectifyer character in the dirty channel + a really great clean channel like a Fender. Very versitile amp but i have barely used it since I got my VM. You can get these fairly cheap on e-bay as they have been replaced by the Express line (not as good for modern metal as the F line). Mesa's are built like tanks too.
