New (to me) Ceriatone Overtone Special

Postby Spotted Dog » 09 Jan 2011, 14:19

Picked up a used one on The Bay, 50w and includes a 1/2 power switch. Paired it up with an Avatar 1x12 Vintage cab and WGS G12-65 clone. So far so good, great at times. Articulate and great touch sensitivity. Lots to explore on this head and the speaker is stiff, so my final verdict is still to come.

Anyone have experience with these?

I wish.

Congrats SD. From what I understand, they can be a bit of a PIA to get dialed in but once you do it's all worth it.

Well that's mighty nice of you bluesbrother, I am fortunate to be able to fund my hobby. I kept putting off buying one of these... didn't want to wait... didn't want to pay full hit... blah blah blah... it was a cloudy day... blah blah blah... I just bought a VM, etc.

Anyway, I'll let you know. BTW the clean channel gets some sweet hair on it.

Congrats! I have the similar Fuchs ODS. Love it & will never sell as long as I'm able to play it.

It can be a pain to dial these D-style amps in; the trick is balancing the clean & OD sides. The clean channel is the preamp section for the drive channel. Start with a clean tone/volume you like and the drive seems easier to dial in I think. I usually wind up diming the 'OD input' knob and lowering the 'OD output'.

Hi Guys

As we showed in the Dumble chapter of TUT6, the overdrive section really cries out for another control - let alone its own EQ. But...

The topology evolved from modifying Fender reverb amps - just as the Mesa Mk1+2s did. The goal was to get the sound of a cranked amp but with control over loudness, so the gain and EQ order ends up as:
gain+EQ/vol+gain for clean
gain+EQ/vol+gain+preset-vol+gain+gain+vol

From either of these, the sound goes to the PA.

Turning the preset-vol into a panel control is a big help to the player being able to set the overdrive with a little bit of independence of the clean sound - which must be set first. In our version - as deployed in our D-PRE kit - we add another control to the overdrive path which gives access to more textures of distortion.

A basic pitfall of early-EQ distortion sounds is that the EQ becomes less effective as more distortion saturation is added. In this regard, late-EQs seem better suited to high-saturation tone control.

Have fun

Thanks for the insights, much appreciated. Of course I jumped right to the OD side, and didn't pay enough attention to dialing in the clean side first. I will definitely try your suggestions. Dime the OD input and lower the output? I'll try that too, inca_roads.

Kevin, I've read your threads and looked at your site, clearly you know what you're talking about.
This piece of info looks really valuable, but ya lost me man. :dunno :bgrin

Would mind expanding on this nugget a little?
