Direct Line Out for Marshall Class 5

Postby bluesmandan » 01 Feb 2011, 14:00

Hello all. Does anyone know if the C5 headphone out can be converted to a regular direct lineout? I'm thinking the internal dummy load and cut off switch can be bypassed, so that the internal speaker will work, and the headphone out could function as a lineout for plugging into a PA or other amplifier. Has anyone done anything like this? It would be a great option for larger gigs...

Anything you can dream up can pretty much be done with manipulation of electronic circuits. There are a ton of ways to the same exact thing with regard to my previous statement. It is usually just a matter of time, money, patience, skill/knowledge level, ect.

If you have at least some good tech skills or beyond, try this as a helpful resource for a starting point. It would be a good idea to get the schematic for the class 5 if you don't already have it.

Hope that helps. :Cheers

Hi Guys

The line output is simply a divided version of the speaker output - two resistors will suffice, or a resistor and a pot, or just a pot. You will want to EQ it for recording and most other purposes.

If you want a ground-isolated line out, use a small transformer such as the Hammond 109T or 109H. The secondary can be used as a balanced output via a TRS or XLR jack and 3-conductor cable. Either of these transformers can handle the full signal voltage at the C5 output. If you spend a bit more money, you can get a good mu-metal encased 1:1 line transformer from Sowter, Lundahl, Cinemag or Jensen.

Have fun

Before you start messing around with any waranty degrading stuff, you could try to use software likes of Guitar Rig as power amp and speaker emulation.

I managed to do a fairly good emulation for my Lil' Elvis by tapping the signal from a pedal in the FX-loop.
I did a quick attempt on the VM, but that didn't really work out that well... but in all honesty... I didn't really give it a fair attempt though.
Requires some trying and failing.

A pedal in the FX loop can be used to kill the volume in to the power section, thus killing the amps output as well.

I wouldn't recommend any Master Volume nob/MOD but YES you can turn the Headphone OUT to a DI to slave to another AMP run direct to the board or whatever you want and this will not 'degrade your amp in any-way but instead vastly improve upon it's TONE and versatility... see my threads for all the details with more to come... Already shared how to get a MV for the headphone OUT now I am going to cover making a special DI/Slave/OUTPUT that can be used with this Volume/POT/MOD to give you a huge range of possibilities...also to be covered is how to add and External speaker Jack that can be used with or without the internal speaker....+++ more to come...
