Overdrive Pedal

Postby argusvidicon » 31 Mar 2012, 05:37

I am 100% satisfied with My Class 5, however:
In lieu of channel switching I'd like suggestions on one or the other of two overdrive pedals I'm looking at. Let me first say I appreciate the negative feed back on Behringer, but would like to save that for another entertaining discussion. I have 20 Behringer products.
I'm considering either the TO800 (solid-state) or the VT999 (tube). With all the knowledgeable members here I would like to hear your suggestions, pros, and cons about either a solid state or tube overdrive for the Class 5.
Also I have ideas of where to place the OD in the chain, but would like to here opinions on that also.
I run the class 5 volume at 3 1/2, about 10:30-11:00 O-Clock

Thanks.

Here is a basic guide for effects chain.

I've never used Behringer products before, but assume they are similar to others. I use a TS-5 Ibanez TubeScreamer and love it into this amp. The Fulltone '69 and '70 pedals sound great as well, and this morning I dusted off a Tech21 XXL distortion box that I'm sorry I had to stop playing until I get some more work done for the day.
I've never used a dirt box that had tubes in it. I'm sure there are plenty of people who will tell you how much better they are. Recently I was looking at a couple, one being the Tube Driver, and didn't think the sound difference was that much. Then again I'm listening through computer speakers as I'm checking out the pedals on YouTube. Check to see if there are any Demo vids on YouTube to help your decision...
As far as placement in the chain, my Wah is first from the guitar, then the TubeScreamer which I then run into the front(I don't use the effects loop on the effects unit) of a Line6 M-13 multi unit which I run a primary TubeScreamer setting. For this amp, most of the time I just use one effect unit at a time, to test tone and rehearse. Good luck on the quest for tone and hope some of my reply is of use to you....

I am partial to treble boosts. I use a Dazatronyx Germanium. Really brings the C5 to life. These go first in the chain. TBs are misunderstood and overlooked IMO. All my other drives seem to be amp specific. The Daz works with any.overdriven tube amp I own.

I've got a wide variety of amps and pedals and it's always interesting how some amps seem to "like" some pedals and not others as far as what I've tried thru the class five head it seems to sound best with a vox satch ice 9 I run the c5 a little hotter than you around 4 to 6 and it meshes well with the freq. generated there
Non Marshall's include 6505+, carvin quad x, fender champ, gen 1 flextone, orange tiny terror, fractal/atomic reactor 18, mesa f30
Scads of ibanez, bc rich, prs, and esp's

Behringer comes out with okay stuff....sometimes.
I prefer their mixers, though. Never liked their guitar effects.
The pedals that sound best through my Class 5, and I've got boxes full: Maxon OD-9, Ibanez TS-9, modded SD-1, and a homemade.
I also like a few distortions in front--like the Ibanez SM-9.

But, it all comes down to the sound you're looking for

I own two behringer pedals, a reverb/delay and a tuner pedal. Both are plastic and cheap. Both have lasted through many gigs over the last 3 years. Behringer pedals are great sounding, they just are built cheap. As long as you take care of them and keep it in a descent pedalboard or gig bag, it will last. I am a full time dad and blue collar man, I ain't paying $200 for a pedal. Granted, it may not be "cool" to show off like a vintage tubescreamer, it doesn't cost the same as the amp you are playing through.

I recently got the Timmy as well (about 2 weeks ago) and I am impressed. I think I have finally found a OD pedal that will stick with me (yea it seems to be that good).

I was using an MXR Classic OD stacked with an MXR Classic Distortion (set as boost) until I picked up an Xotic BB preamp a month ago at a pawn shop. It's my favorite OD ever and for the first time I have a pedal I know I'll never get rid of.

Thats interesting DirtySteve. I have eyeballed that one for a while. In fact, all of the Xotic drive pedals have been impressive in video reviews. You using it by itself or stacking it with the ones you mentioned?

By itself. I haven't even hooked up my MXRs since I got it.

Always heard great things about the Exotic BB.

On another note, I am expecting the limited edition Jimi Hendrix Fuzz Face tommorow. Anxious to see how that performs with my Class 5
