New 1960AV vs. older 1960A

Postby JkGriffin » 13 Mar 2012, 13:40

K... I wonder if my ears are playing a trick on me...

So I connected up the JCM800 1987 to my old 1960A (2003) cabinet and run it with 2x12 (V30 / G12T-75). Using my Stratocaster it sounded amazing... just amazing. I decided that this amp would play a more vital part in my little cave and placed it in the "recording corner" using a 2011 1960AV cabinet with the same speaker configuration... and the sound was just harsh...

I swapped a V30 with a G12T-75 speaker between the two cabinets. The V30 has the same location (bottom left from front view) in both cabinets.
Both G12T-75's should be fairly broken in after 5-7 years active live use...

Still, the old cabinet sounds real sweet both with Strat and Les Paul while the newer cabinet sound harsh...
Is is something like "breaking-in the wood in a cabinet"?

Unfortunately I don't have time to play with this any more until the weekend...

Very strange, I would suspect the location in the room between the two cabinets are the difference. Are both angle cabinets?

If you got a very old cabinet there is differences to the construction and woods i think. But between yours there shouldn´t be aby big differences.
