JCM 900 Dual Reverb

Postby Mats A » 05 Apr 2012, 01:00

What do you think about the JCM 900 Dual Reverb head? I recently tried one and i liked it. But when looking at the schematic all of the first stage is IC and then there is a diode bridge for distortion. Not much valve there. But it sounds good. When the JCM 8900´s came out i had a High Gain Master Volume MkIII amp but that i didn´t like. Thin and buzzy sounding. But this Dual Reverb sounded different fatter.

There's a guy locally selling a 4500 head that I've been thinking of buying. I'm a Dave Navarro fan so I've always wanted a 900, and they're pretty cheap in this part of the world so I'll probably pick one up some day. I've always liked the sound of them but I can understand people who don't in the sense that they're a bit harsher and not as pleasing sounding as 800's. But if you like it, that's what matters.

I bought a 900 stack in 94 and sold it ten years ago when everything with diod clipping was a nono, including silver jubilees. I had a full stack 100watt 50 watter a later again a 100 watter jub sold them and the 900 as the first generally exepted attenuators became everymans thing revitalising the old plexis and 4-holers.
However the 900 have thier place in Marshall history and you can use it for many differentstyles of music. Good amp for a gigging musician but perhaps not the one and only amp I would bring to the studio.

Might get one now, in a few years they are "vintage" ...

Yesterday I bought a 2210 JCM 800 (have a 2205) for less money then the new JCM1 1 watter amp. The are the forberer of the 900 series but with a bit more growl.

Best plexi

I have two Dual Reverb Mats but I'm selling one of them since I ordered the YJM 100 so now
you know where to get one :howdy

I think they work really well, especially channel A if you use good tubes and bias them properly

Fender Stratocaster

Sometimes i think the 2205/2210 amps lacks a bit of top end. It´s like it was cut off. Maybe that is why John Norum is using his wah wah on solos so much to get the top end.

My first amp was a Marshall JCM 900 4102, which I bought in the fall of 1991. The 4102 was the 2x12 combo version of the 100w hi-gain dual reverb amp. I've always loved it. I've never compared it side-by-side with any other Marshall. I guess I'd be interested to see how it compares to the JVM 205.
Happiness is playing a Gibson guitar through a Marshall amplifier.

Me too, my first valve amp was the dual reverb 100 watt combo and I still have it.
It's not pretty after all this years but it still works all right.

I listened to some recordings i did with different amps at some rehearsals with my band. On different occasions i had a JCM800 Split Channel 50W, Dual Reverb 100W, DSL100 and JVM410H. I must say that the Split Channel, Dual Reverb and DSL all have kind of a muffled sound. Not much attack on the strings when playing a solo. It´s like the crisp top end is cut off and if you turn up the treble it sounds very harsh and fizzy. The JVM has a bit more open sound with a crispier top end more like the YJM, Standards and 2203/2204 Master Volumes. So maybe the JVM isn´t that bad after all. It has too many knobs though :think
