JCM 800 2203 Kerry King vs. JCM 800 2203 early 80's

Postby wilzgt » 20 Sep 2010, 09:44

Hi,

A local store has a JCM 800 KK for sale that I played and like very much. How does the tone of it compare with the original JCM 800? Is the gain strength about the same(minus the Beast option)?

I like that the JCM 800 KK is newer. So, those of you with the early 80's models, are there any known issues that come up after 25+ years?

Price wise the KK model seems higher, so is it worth the extra $$? Are KT-88 tubes easy to get?

My music interests are in blues, classic rock, hard rock. I use a strat and Les Paul. Recently, I'm practicing metal riffs at home to improve my overall rhythm. So, I'd like a nice metal sounding amp. I use an OD pedal for boost as well...

Any advice/suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Sound is very different. A stock 2203 doesn't have the balls of the KK. Understand that the KK amp is not a bedroom or pratice amp, needs to run wide open to make it worth it. KT88 tubes are not a big problem to buy.

It doesn't sound like the original 2203, with or without the beast option.

I think you'd be better off ordering the JCM800 reissue, if that's what you're really wanting, they're still on the official Marshall website, so I assume your dealer will be able to order one for you.

But if you really like the KK - go for it!

Maybe check out the Zakk Wylde signature 2203?

Or buy an original - I've had no issues with my 2203 from 1979.

I have owned an original JCM800 & the reissue as well as the KK.
All three different amps but thay all have the 800 crunch.
If you like the KK go for it. It is a truly beast ... you will not able to get that gain on a original JCM800 even using additional pedals.
At the same time if you are unsure do try to find a JCM800 and try one of them just to be sure.
You will know once you play one ....
