Got myself a 50watt Plexi

Postby Onza_Jk » 26 Mar 2011, 13:19

Was looking to get a class 5, but instead i got a 1987 head and a 1960cab with 25w greenbacks. It belonged to Guy Fletcher of Dire straits, it didn't get used much over the last few years, just sitting in his studio so i bought it. The amp sounds fucking awesome although it hasn't been re-valved in 7 years i think haha. I'll upload some pictures when i can find my camera!
Guitars: Gibson Les Paul Classic, Gibson Midtown Custom, Fender American Standard Stratocaster, Fender Telecaster.
Amps: Marshall Vintage Modern, Marshall JTM Offset, Vox AC15.
Past Marshalls: 1987x, JVM410H, SL5, JMP1, 1960AX, 1936.

Funny how that happens, sometimes you walk in to buy a cable and some strings and walk out with a new Les Paul. Congrats on the new amp!!

That's very cheap! Are they originals or reissues?

Either way, great price.
Still my guitar gently weeps

Both are reissue's, heads in very good condition, cabinet has few scruffs and tears, all in good working order.

Definitely!
The 1960AX cab i got with it also makes my JVM sound better on the crunch channels. So it's a double win situation, although i no longer need the JVM and might get rid of it.

Just a guess, but bear in mind that a lot of business set-ups write off new purchases against tax for many years after buying.

There comes a point where the taxman claims back the depreciation write-offs of previous years if a selling price is too high (i.e. a higher selling price brings in less overall money for the seller).

Just a shot in the dark ...

I bought it from somebody personally not a store or business.
Though what you said, i can see why some business's/shops would do so.

No, I'm trying to describe that if the fellow was successful enough to be in Dire Straits that he probably runs his income and outgoings as a business - maybe even as a corporate identity - and would be recognised by the government tax office as such.

In other words, different rules (literally) apply than if it is a typical customer of a music shop. Business set-ups (e.g. a high earning pro performer) can write off all sorts of losses and tax depreciations - travel expenses, accomodation and ... loss of second-hand re-sale value of equipment purchased when new etc.

If I was unclear (in trying to keep the business seminar to a minimum) I don't think music retailers would act in this way. They would soon put themselves out of action if they did.

If the above was the case, it would explain your great luck on the deal - cannot happen from a regular shop or second-hand seller, just from musos working pro tax arrangements.

Or maybe he just liked you.

P.S. Can you tell us the speakers in this 1960 cab? There are so many suffixes for that series that I can't track them all.
